We Are The World!
I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again.
I do not know if it was yesterday’s post or simply thinking about so many who are suffering in the world, But I found myself waxing nostalgic and returning to a time a quarter of a century ago, when a group of musicians gathered together for one night, and created one of the most joyous and wondrous videos ever to be released, not just because of its message but also for the logistical genius that was required to make it in the first place!
It was 1985 and the African continent in the middle of a drout like never seen before. With children and their parents dying by the thousands every day from famine, a small group of talented musicians got together to write and produce a special song to raise the world’s awareness of the plight of millions and to alleviate Third World hunger. Well it worked. Dozens of other musicians signed their names on the dotted line and before long, “We Are the World” became a part of history.
Released on March 7th, 1985, the single became a worldwide commercial success, topping music charts and becoming the fastest-selling American pop single in history. In fact “We Are the World” received a Quadruple Platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America, and received 3 Grammy’s, an American Music Award and a People’s Choice Award. The list of people who recorded the live video reads like a Who’s Who of musical (and entertainment) genius, and include the following names:

I shared the video for this production on my Facebook page and the response to it was overwhelming, with many people remembering exactly where they were when they first heard the song and saw the video. And it is because of this type of reaction, that on February 1, 2010, a remake of the song by another all-star cast of singers and entertainers was recorded. It was released as a single on February 12, 2010, and the proceeds from the record were earmarked to provide aide to the survivors of the magnitude 7.0 earthquake which struck Haiti on January 12, 2010. I also shared with Facebook this second recording, and I am sharing both with you today.

Yes indeed, “We Are the World” and we are all our brother’s keeper! And just because you aren’t famous or an entertainer or singer, doesn’t mean you can’t make a difference! If you are interesting in finding how you might be able to help in your community, just visit the following web site and type in your zip code into the search engine. Or contact your local municipal office, public school, hospital or nursing home to see if they are looking for volunteers!
One last thing to remember. Some of the talented artists who were responsible for this magic happening are no longer with us. Michael Jackson, Ray Charles and Waylon Jennings are but three that come to mind….there may be others. As is God’s way, sometimes He robs the world of some of its best and most talented people for purposes known only to Him. But I would like to take a moment and ask that you say a prayer for these talented artists taken from our world far too soon, and say a prayer as well as for the families still mourning their passing! I also want to remind you of the untold thousands upon thousands of lives lost as a result of the events that prompted these efforts to begin with! All are precious in His eyes and all are deserving of our remembrances and prayers!
Your power brings us to birth, Your providence guides our lives, and by Your command we return to dust.
Lord, those who die still live in Your presence. In fact, faith teaches us that their lives change but do not end.
We ask for your mercy for those left behind, that they might be reassured that their departed loved ones now share your Heavenly Kingdom.
In company with Christ, who died and now lives, may all the faithful departed rejoice in Your kingdom, where pain and fear is no more and where all our tears are wiped away.
We ask that you one day unite us together again in one family, to sing Your praise forever and ever.
In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.
