Thought For The Day 07/07/12

The Cleansing Waters

Tears are God’s gift to us.  Our holy water.  They heal us as they flow.

Sweet Bitter Love

We spend an amazing 40 weeks growing and developing in side of our mother’s womb. She nurtures and feeds and protects us with her body until the day arrives when we emerge, all pink and wiggly and new! And then still our mother nurtures and feeds and protects the physical being that we are until we come to the day when, miracle of miracles, we are a grown person beginning our journey along life’s road armed with all of the wisdom that has been given to us. The health of our bodies has been assured by her tender loving care, which is wonderful for the physical being that we are. But what about the health of our spiritual being? What about our very souls?

The Rite of Baptism is often considered to be the doorway to spiritual life in that by being anointed by its waters, we become members of the community of Christ. We all know that mankind was, for all time, tainted by the events that occurred in the Garden of Eden. And since that day, the struggle for our souls had been an ongoing battle between 2 polar opposites….good and evil. But God knew the day would arrive when mankind was ready to undergo what would be a rite of passage in which we would be guaranteed a place for all time with Him in His mansion on high! And so he sent a blessing to Earth in the form of a tiny baby; a being conceived of His very essence, and as such, was the one person alive who was untouched by the taint of original sin. Christ’s birth was for the sole purpose of gifting to us one who would act as a sacrifice. It was His blood that was shed for all of mankind, which cleanses us all and paves the way for our salvation. And when we choose the Rite of Baptism for our child or we make the choice for ourself, we are experiencing newness of life through waters which are infused, spiritually, with Christ’s cleansing blood.

When Jesus appears to the Disciples before leaving this world and ascending into heaven to sit at His Father’s side, He gives them two important commands, which were His very last instructions to those who would remain behind. He shared with them the two things upon which so much of our concept of faith rests, even to this day. Firstly, He tells them to go forth and teach all the people about God the Father, and to share the message of how Christianity and faith provides man with the blue prints needed for living a long and happy Christ centered life. Secondly, He tells them to go forth and to baptize those who choose to journey along that pathway of faith, that they might know the joy of salvation through being cleansed by the blood He shed. I have no doubt but that there were many, many other things which could have been shared in those brief final moments together but instead, he reinforced but these two. Teach. Baptize.

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28:18-20 NIV
