Thought For The Day 07/14/12

Let The Games Begin

Golf appeals to the idiot in us and the child.  Just how childlike golf players become is proven by their frequent inability to count past five.

Today’s post will be abbreviated for a very good reason. Six months worth of hard work are about to pay off. Dan and I are the co-chairs for a charity event in our community to benefit at risk children who have become part of the system, AKA the Horry County, SC, Department of Social Services or DSS, because of charges of abuse or neglect by their parents or caretakers. Through advocacy, the people who volunteer their time as members of the Guardian ad Litem program, follow children throughout the time they are in the system, assuring that they do not become another statistic. Guardians monitor the welfare of the children and make sure the safety and care plan established by DSS is working optimally for little ones who so often do not or can not speak up for themselves. Guardians make recommendations on behalf of the child to the Family Court judge hearing the case and generally, their opinions carry great weight as legal decisions are being made regarding what is best for the child. It is not easy work and all Guardians are volunteers. And, as it the way of the world these days, federal funding for programs like these are among the first to be cut from budgets, as lawmakers try desperately to reign in expenses and keep budgets balanced. And so, we here, in Horry County, SC, formed a non-profit entity entitled Heroes for Children which serves to raise funds to supplement dwindling coffers and assure that there are resources always available to continue training new Guardians and to promote the message throughout the community of the importance of the work the Guardians do. I am a Board Member of Heroes for Children. Dan is a Guardian ad Litem.

Today we celebrate the inaugural running of the (what we hope will become an annual event) “Hitting It For Heroes Golf Tournament”. 144 men and women are gathering for a 9AM shotgun start and will be playing one of the Grand Strand’s premier golfing destinations, the Tournament Players Club of Myrtle Beach. Through the generous support of businesses in our community who have provided raffle donations as well as golf hole sponsorships, we hope to raise between $8,000.00 and $10,000.00 for this worthy program. Even my brother, sister-in-law and niece are traveling in from NJ to join us today and my 85-year-old father will be playing golf for the first time in 10 years with his son…my brother!

It has been tremendously hard work coordinating these efforts but seeing the smile on the face of a single little one who no longer has to fear living in her own home will make it all worthwhile. So I beg your forgiveness today and tomorrow for the brief posts I will be making. But know that it is for a very good reason!
