Thought For The Day 08/07/12

The Rock That Is Our Foundation!

Living involves tearing up one rough draft after another.

Lately as my posts have taken a darker turn toward the part of our lives that we both dread and fear the most, Death, maybe we should do an about-face and talk about Death’s antonym or opposite…..Life! What do we want to teach others about what living a Christ filled life means? What do we need to embrace or discover about ourselves to make the things we bring to God’s feet on judgement day count? Where, how and what do we need to do to become what God knew we could be from the moment He drew up the blueprint for the human being?

In thinking about this, I was reminded of a song that was taught in my Sunday School as a child. Remember the song about the wise man and the foolish man and where they built their houses? Both men built homes on different foundations….one rock and one sand. And, of course we know how they fared. They may both have used the finest of materials. They may have used the hardest of hard woods. They may have used galvanized nails. They may have even employed the same hurricane strapping that every house built along the east coast must employ in their construction. Yes, they spared no expense in obtaining the finest of materials possible but it all means absolutely nothing when the foundation upon which they build their house is too weak to support the structure. And it is no different in life! Unless we first establish the solid foundation that faith gives us, we will soon find ourselves standing in a pile of rubble as our house….indeed, our life, collapses all around us!

I have talked recently about self-esteem and self-image issues as they relate to bullying. Yes, words can cut and yes, they can hurt but only if we give them the power to do so. But the buck must stop with us. Until we learn to love ourselves, warts and all, we will always be at the mercy of others. But this understanding doesn’t just happen….it is created! We must remember that we all have meaning, value, purpose and we all have a role essential to what is God’s plan for the world. We are, after all, created entirely in His image as we are told early in the Bible. Genesis 1: 27 NIV says, “So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.” And with this comes being endowed with the ability to overcome our adversities and propensity toward sinfulness that can be so destructive in undermining that foundation we need to support our lives. And just as faith gives its strength to our foundation, so does belief in the promise made by Christ and His sacrifice bring order to our spiritual health as long as we give Him the importance He is due. If we make Christ the center and the focus and the motive for what it is that we try to accomplish every day then we can not fail the trust that God has placed with we, His children!

8) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Hebrews 13: 8 RSV

7) For he which is Lord over all shall fear no man’s person, neither shall he stand in awe of any man’s greatness: for he hath made the small and great, and careth for all alike.

Wisdom 6: 7 KJV with Apocrypha
