Today with God’s blessing (and man’s decision not to act irrationally or violently), the sun will set once more and with it comes the unofficial end to what many of us consider to be the last work week of summer. Yes, the Autumnal Equinox does not really occur until September 22, 2012 at 10:49AM EDT, however you all know what I mean. The kids, if not already back attending classes for the new school year, will be within the next few days. That last opportunity for a family summer adventure will be a thing of the past, put once again on hold until a brand new year and new summer season dawns bright and crisp once more. And yet, new adventures await us all even now as day light hours dwindle and nighttime skies, hazy and star hidden, overcast with the humidity that is to be found on an August night, gives way to the freshening cooling breezes and the clear, star twinkling scene that awaits our view in September! Yes, there is a season for everything that happens under heaven.

The changing season. His example of the proof He offers that there is no time like the present to rewrite our story. A chance to rectify and atone for past sins because He is a merciful God. In His infinite wisdom, God opens the door for us all, to get things right once more, not just with ourselves, but with Him, as well! Second chances! A treasure right there in front of our faces, just for the taking! And while we might sometimes question the view of God as merciful as we see bad things happening in the world all around us, mercy is, indeed His nature. After all, He sent His son to earth to die for the sole purpose of paying the penalty for the sin of the rest of us so that we have the opportunity of grabbing those second chances that are right in front of our noses. It is a deal He offers to every one of us. Whether or not we choose to seize the opportunity is another matter entirely. That choice rests solely on our own shoulders because of the decision He made to allow us free will. And I know that the times we see the heartbreaking things that happen around us, it is because we that have turned away from Him, not He from us! Just think about this one thing when you doubt! In Psalm 136, God tells us 26 times that His love and mercy endures forever. 26 times!

Psalm 136

(TNIV)

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.    His love endures forever.

2 Give thanks to the God of gods.     His love endures forever.

3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords:     His love endures forever.

4 to him who alone does great wonders,     His love endures forever.

5 who by his understanding made the heavens,     His love endures forever.

6 who spread out the earth upon the waters,     His love endures forever.

7 who made the great lights—     His love endures forever.

8 the sun to govern the day,     His love endures forever.

9 the moon and stars to govern the night;     His love endures forever.

10 to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt     His love endures forever.

11 and brought Israel out from among them     His love endures forever.

12 with a mighty hand and outstretched arm;     His love endures forever.

13 to him who divided the Red Sea asunder     His love endures forever.

14 and brought Israel through the midst of it,     His love endures forever.

15 but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea;     His love endures forever.

16 to him who led his people through the wilderness;     His love endures forever.

17 to him who struck down great kings,     His love endures forever.

18 and killed mighty kings—     His love endures forever.

19 Sihon king of the Amorites     His love endures forever.

20 and Og king of Bashan—     His love endures forever.

21 and gave their land as an inheritance,     His love endures forever.

22 an inheritance to his servant Israel.     His love endures forever.

23 He remembered us in our low estate     His love endures forever.

24 and freed us from our enemies.     His love endures forever.

25 He gives food to every creature.     His love endures forever.

26 Give thanks to the God of heaven.     His love endures forever.

I posted this once before but it is worth seeing and hearing once more.  Uploaded on May 15, 2007, it is a video a student made for his World Geography Class project using the song “Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is A Season)” By the Byrds. Click the link to view the YouTube video!

4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
