Thought For The Day 09/09/12

Christian Persecution!

Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani

Let us have but one end in view, the welfare of humanity; and let us put aside all selfishness in consideration of language, nationality, or religion.

John Comenius

17th century philosopher

I do not know if an outcry from the four corners of the world was responsible or not for the news I am going to share or if Iran finally realized the futility of continuing the current path they were following with regard to one solitary man with a tremendously deep and abiding faith in and love for Jesus Christ, but today Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani is a FREE man! After spending 1062 days on death row for refusing to renounce his Christian faith, the Iranian pastor has been acquitted, released and is now home.

For those of you who do not know the story behind this miracle, Pastor Youcef was arrested in 2009 on charges stemming from his questioning the mandatory instruction of Iranian children in the Islamic religion. Found guilty, he was told that he would be released if he renounced his Christian faith. He refused and was sentenced to death. Millions of voices were raised in his defense from all over the world and petitions were signed urging advocacy by the United States government to the government of Iran, regarding the matter. I myself signed this petition well over a year ago, and shared it with all of my Facebook friends, as well! And yet Pharoah’s (Iran’s) heart remained hardened. Even as recently as the last 60 days, there seemed to be increasing evidence that his execution was imminent. Expecting to face additional charges by the government during proceedings on Saturday, the Iranian court surprised the world and elected to free him, releasing him into the arms of his loving family, which includes his wife and two sons, who were but little boys when he was taken from them!

While we are grateful for every little miracle, do not for a single minute believe that the story of Pastor Yousef in an unusual one. There are still untold thousands languishing in prisons throughout Iran for the same determination of guilt as well as hundreds of thousands more in countries such as Burma, China, North Korea, Pakistan, Vietnam and approximately 3 dozen other countries not listed here. Some of those imprisoned are Christian pastors, some are foreigners on mission assignments, some are evangelists but many many more are ordinary believers like most of you all reading this today, imprisoned solely because they chose to publicly admit to their Christian faith. Right now I am thinking of another man by the name of Jamaa. Jamaa Ait Bakrim is a Moroccan as well as a Christian who has been in prison for his faith since 2005. He was accused of Proselytism as well as other misdeeds, for which he received a 15 year sentence! It is not unusual that charges are fabricated by the authorities to squelch the increasing spread of Christianity throughout predominantly Muslim regions.

While we believe there is little any of us who live within the relative comfort and safety of our homes in countries that do not just allow the freedom to worship, but who also respect the right of its citizens to choose which faith they will embrace, can do to help, but there are several options available to you. Simply enter the phrase “Stop Christian Persecution” into your web browser and you will be connected with hundreds of organizations that are all united in sharing the message of these men and women….martyrs who perhaps believe that they have been forgotten by the other people who share the world with them. However I have not forgotten them and now, neither have you! I charge you with the mission of remembering the sacrifice that they are making for the rest of us who all to often fail to appreciate our freedoms. Act! Let them know that you remember and appreciate what it is they are doing. And just in case you are tempted to let the other guy take care of things, I can guarantee that there is another who will appreciate what it is that you do. It is the same being that knows what each and every single one of these men and women……indeed all of us…….hold within our hearts. GOD!

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:10 NIV
