Let There be Peace On Earth, And Let It Begin With Me!

“I have been all things unholy. If God can work through me, He can work through anyone.”

St Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Prayer of St Francis

Becoming an instrument of PEACE! Is it even possible that one person can become this wonderfully magical being that can serve as a catalyst in healing the agonies of mankind? Just think about our history right here in the good ole U. S. of A.! Our history has been tumultuous, at best, almost from the moment of our nation’s founding. Did you know that, we were involved in at least a dozen wars between 1700 and 1900 in the United States and this does not include the 33 odd wars we fought with the Native American population? And it was with much hope that the people of this country bid farewell to the 19th century and greeted to 20th century full of hopes for an era of peace and harmony between all the people of the world. And, of course, hopes for this end were dashed as one conflict after another descended…..from World War I to our first foray into the Middle East in Operation Desert Storm, the last war we fought during the 20th century. Even today, desires for peace seem as elusive to our planet as is a wisp of smoke! And still we long for the day when there will be a complete and total cessation of hostilities! I don’t know about you, but I am tired of the fighting, and the violence, and the hatred, and the bigotry that is so pervasive today!

Yes, “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and let it begin with me! Let me be slow to anger and fast to forgive! Let me use my words to create and build people up rather that to belittle and demean and tear down my fellow man! Let my hands do all manner of good things in my community rather than to tear apart the fabric of other’s works! Let me see others with my heart and not my eyes which can so often cloud the thing I am looking at! Let me take from others only the things they freely choose to share, and let me, in return, reciprocate with only my best gifts and efforts! Let me wear my faith openly and proudly so that all will know I am a Christian rather than hiding my light under a bushel! Yes,  “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and let it begin with me!

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
With God as our Father
Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
With every step I take
Let this be my solemn vow.
To take each moment
And live each moment
With peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth,
And let it begin with me.
