Thought For The Day 10/08/12

It Is What It Is!

“The mystery of human destiny is that we are fated, but that we have the freedom to fulfill or not fulfill our fate: realization of our fated destiny depends on us. While inhuman beings like the cockroach realize the entire cycle without going astray because they make no choices.”

Clarice Lispector

The Passion According to G.H.

Does the phrase “It is what it is” resonate with any of you? I know that I use those very words so often that I have lost count! And yet, take a second and really think about those words. “It is what it is”. Five little words, the largest of which contains only four letters. Those 12 collective letters imply that all is directed by fate and that we and the other million odd external influences that collide with our lives every day direct the assault, while we have absolutely no impact on the outcome of the thing we are looking at and making an observation about! And when you really consider the matter, is this really the truth? FATE and PREDESTINATION….are they the same?

Yes, God is the master  “cartographer” for all that exists in the world as we know it. (That is the PREDESTINATION part of the equation!) And yet GOD and FATE are NOT the same thing. Fate allows that everything is directed by chance as well as man’s baser inclinations (call it Satan if you will) and because of these things, it is inevitable that the outcome of events rests solely on whether or not man allows all of those external forces to sway the actions or decisions he is making. Fate is, in fact, a compilation of all of the IRRATIONAL forces that exist. God, on the other hand, is a RATIONAL force in the lives of man. The thing is, that in either case, the outcome is unchanged. The final decisions for the way we travel are left up to us because that is the way God mapped our journey through life.

There is a wonderful story that sets the tone for understanding the differences between those irrational forces or FATE and the rational force that controls our life, or GOD! It is the tale of a young boy who lived in Holland.

The Little Dutch Boy

There was once a young and adventurous young boy who lived in Holland. His home was very near a huge windmill whose blades were so monstrous that they almost swept the ground during their rotation. They had claimed their share of innocent victims through the years….people who carelessly passed too close to the blades.

Now the boy’s parents had told him of the dangers many many times and had forbidden him to go near to the structure, even describing in detail how the blades had been known to clutch at people, carrying them far into the air and either dropping their victims or pinning them in place where blade after blade struck, stealing the life from the body! But boys will be boys and the child’s curiosity got the best of him and he decided to play there, the dangers of the place swept away as he became absorbed in his play. And then, suddenly, as the wind picked up, he was struck from behind and was swept up and away into space, arms flailing as he found himself upside down, knowing that the worst was yet to come, and come it did.

The unrelenting blows fell heavy and hard. Heart sinking and sure his life would soon be over. He closed his eyes against the assault and twisted away, in an effort to escape when suddenly he was certain he was about to see our Heavenly Father’s face. Reddened eyes opened in the young, pink cheeked, but tear-stained face, and suddenly he did, indeed, spy his father. But it was the face of his earthly father that he saw, meting out the punishment for disobedience.

Suddenly the tears flowed once more from the frightened boy….more tears than he had ever wept before. But they were not tears of pain but tears from a sense of relief and happiness like he had never felt before! And the lesson was never forgotten…the difference between the fate of falling into the machinery and into the arms of certain death and the predestination of falling into the arms of a loving father…..God!

For the authorities are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you like to live without being afraid of the authorities? Then do what is right, and you will receive their approval.
