It’s A New Day

Littleness gets swallowed up here. All the viciousness that makes other cities vicious is sucked up and absorbed in New York.

I am tied to the Big Apple in more ways than I can describe to you. Yes, I was born and bred in New Jersey. In fact, I spent every summer of my teenage years basking in the sun in Ocean City, New Jersey, where our family had a house that sat, smack dab, between the marsh and the beach! It was the place where my children first tasted the magic of the briny sea and felt the powder on their feet of billions upon billions of shells, pulverized into a fine grit. But when I turned 18 and attended Wagner College located in Staten Island, which is one of the five boroughs that comprise New York City, I forever became a New Yorker. Spending my four years on a campus that overlooked New York Harbor from its lofty perch on Grymes Hill, the majesty and splendor that was the New York City skyline at night, lulled me to sleep with its twinkling magic. And the morning sun gleaming on miles upon miles of glass skyscraper windows, heralded the dawn of a new day for me. And when I met the man I would marry, a lifelong New Yorker, well my fate was sealed as one who would forever be tied to the greatest city on the planet!

Once again, New York City fell to the stinging barbs of the attackers weapons. However, this time they were not attacks by the hand of man, but were, instead, attacks by the hand of God himself! And just as untold billions have asked over the millenia of years marking human existence on the earth, we want……no, we NEED to know why! And yet, just as we’ve never really been able to answer to our satisfaction the why’s of the other events of devastation that have marked civilization, we will not have our questions answered this time, either. Yes, we might just have those environmentalists out there shouting “Global Warming” at the top of their lungs, and to give credit where credit is due, there may well be truth in their assertions. However, more likely than not, the only answer we will be receiving is the same as the one given to Moses in Exodus 3:14 NIV: God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.'”

___

Now that will not sit well with most of us, especially those of us who lay claim to the Big Apple as home. We are, after all, a collective group of individuals who live lives marked by the need for expediency in all that we do. It is not enough to get an answer. We must have that answer yesterday. However these days, we are going to need to accept that we will be left only with a hollow sense of the whys and wherefores explaining the destruction from Superstorm Sandy. In reality, there is no explaining just as there is no answer for why apples are red and why milk is white. Just as I AM sent Moses to lead the Israelites out of bondage, so has I AM given mankind the storms of life that we must not just endure but must triumph over, as well. Are we up to the task? Well as one who counts herself a New Yorker, my answer must be a resounding YES!

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
