When we were children we were grateful to those who filled our stockings at Christmas time. Why are we not grateful to God for filling our stockings with legs?

G.K. Chesterton
1874-1936

Gilbert Keith Chesterton was one of the most influential English writers of the 20th century, and has been called the “prince of paradox”. His prolific and diverse output included journalism, philosophy, poetry, biography, Christian apologetics, fantasy and detective fiction.

I have married the quote above with the title of this post, “David and Goliath” as a way to make a point about the current political unrest between Israel and Hamas. Now I included the photo and title not because I necessarily view these two groups of people as either one of the two characters depicted but more because like in GK Chesterton’s quote, I see the outcome of this conflict as being akin to one who forgets to give thanks for the legs they have that wear the stockings. You see, it can not be a matter of whose rights have been infringed or which nation is entitled to the region in which they have settled, but rather that to fail to find a resolution to the issues at hand can have no other outcome but to find one dead on the battlefield from the effects of hostilities.

___

Now I am no ambassador whose role it is to broker a mutually beneficial existence between people whose lives have always been one of conflict, especially when that conflict involves the fundamentals of faith. I am, after all, a Christian and would naturally find that my faith might tend to guide my actions in one particular direction. So for today, I choose to embrace the role of observer and perhaps even act as a compass of sorts. What I can do is share my advice and opinion on the matter, especially as that opinion ties into matters of faith as I understand them to be!

___

It seems to me that the time has come to stop viewing the world as a thing…a thing that provides us with what it is we need to survive like the resources that can be mined or harvested in some way. The time has come to cease imposing the will of one philosophy upon others. Instead, the time has come to embrace all of the positives that God/Yahweh/Yeshua/Allah has endowed to man such as peace, harmony, love, compassion and brotherhood! Afterall, there are more things that bind the human creature as one than there are that divide us one from the other. Are we not one family of beings that have the capacity to utilize our intellect to think and to reason and to understand morality by being able to both define and act upon a ‘code’ of what is right and wrong or good and evil? We can choose to act for good by choosing those actions which are both selfless and noble, or we can choose to act for evil which embraces only those actions which are selfish or destructive.

___

Now take some time to really think about what it is we want. Do we want to find ourselves lying dead atop our stubborn refusal to embrace the things that unite humans as a collective group of selfless and noble people? The choice seems to be an easy one for me to see. After all, whether we are red or yellow or black or white and whether we are Christian, Jew, Islamic, Sikh, Hindi or Buddhist, we have all been created in our Father’s image and with a heart that can love!

___

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Genesis 1:26 NIV

Please remember the millions of our brothers and sisters as well as furry companions today who are suffering from the effects of Superstorm Sandy. Give as much as you can, as often as you can to the following organizations or groups.
