Goodbye To The Old

Hello To The New

“Your  success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you  shall form an invincible host against difficulties.”

Helen  Keller

___

December 31st…..the one day of the year that most people find themselves thinking about the life they lived during previous 365 days and how the moments of that year have impacted both that life and the world in which we all live, as well! And I can only speak for myself, but I feel certain that we, as a civilized world might just come to see 2012 as the “year that will live in infamy”. It seems that the bad events that occurred in 2013 seem to far outweigh the positive experiences during the same time frame…..almost as if we, as a society, are morally devolving rather than evolving. Yes, it seems as if we the people are failing to live lives that seek to create better world for humankind! And I wonder whether one reason for this downturn is that man is falling away from his faith and from God!

___

The faith of the human race is scrutinized in the book of Revelations, in particular the Laodicean Church, and describes a faith and a people so consumed by the rights of people that they seems to forget that for Christians, it is the word that truly matters, as man seeks to be guided to live in a way that is pleasing to Him. And in describing the parable of the sower in His teachings, Jesus seeks to describe the hearts and souls of people by talking about what happens to seeds that are being sown.

  • The seeds that fall and failed to germinate, and were, instead, eaten, sounds just like the man who ignores God’s word and instead lives and dies by his sin.
  • The seeds which fall on stone but did germinate only to wither and die in the heat of day, describes man who hears the word and changes but only until the next trial comes along which then finds them turning their back on faith, once more!
  •   The seeds that fall in thorns and were choked as they grew, talks of a man who hears and heeds the word but is waylaid by the material things man comes to idolize!
  • The last three groups of seeds are the ones that find the rich earth and take root and flourish. And while their productivity might vary, it is these seeds that spring forth from fertile ground that talks of people who are not just spirit filled, but who use that spirit to share with others the fruitfulness and bounty that is to be found in His message.

___

So now that the time is here to rehash the life we have lived during the last year, will you seek to make, and keep, some New Year resolutions that will make the world of 2013 that we all share, a better place for you, your family, your community, your world and your God?

___

Don’t be fooled by what they say. For that day will not come until there is a great rebellion against God and the man of lawlessness is revealed–the one who brings destruction.

2 Thessalonians 2:3 NLT

The 3 C’s!

Choices, Chances, Changes!

___

3 Cs

___

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.”

Leo Tolstoy

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/change

___

I have spent months now writing about what I have come to lovingly refer to as my personal A B C’s of life…..Always Be with Christ. Sharing those A B C’s, after all, is what I am finding myself being led to do. Then yesterday, I saw a picture on Facebook that talked about the 3 C’s of Life and I started to envision the journey I’ve been making using those guidelines instead, and I like the way the thoughts of those 3 C’s resonate with the changes that are taking place within my heart. You must make a CHOICE to take a CHANCE or your life will never CHANGE!

___

Taking a CHANCE on God by choosing a road of faith should be easier that it sometimes seems to be, and I think that is because all too often, we don’t have an idea of the direction we think we want to journey before we begin our trip. Just like a car trip we are about to embark on, we must have at least an idea of where it is we want to head and we should have given a map at least a cursory glance as to our options for the route we want to take! Now a journey to find faith is not exactly the same thing and I am certainly not saying that we all must have made a decision that is set in stone to turn toward God right from the start. Rather, I think it means that we heed the little nudges we feel, that tell us that there is something missing in our lives that might just be fulfilled, by looking in God’s direction! Then we must leave our minds and our hearts open to the possibilities that seeking out or drawing closer to our faith might just afford us. After all, as one of the founding fathers of Orthodoxy once wrote, for man to fully understand God, the degree of our comprehension would be no greater than a single grain of sand, measured against the total of all of the other grains of sand on every single beach in the entire world!

___

So begin what I hope will be the lifelong CHOICE to make a CHANGE and to walk a little nearer to God by simply taking a CHANCE with a single step in the direction you believe to be the right one, because while it is not impossible to make a u-turn should you find you have erred, the farther down the road you head, the more difficult it becomes to choose another option for your life! It is then that you may find yourself rationalizing that the wrong road is not just the correct one, but also that it is at least as good, if not better, than His way!

___

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 12:1-2 ESV

Do You Hear Him?

The voice of the intellect is a soft one, but it does not rest until it has gained a hearing.

___

I posted a joke yesterday on my MandysPath Facebook page called “The Boat”. It goes something like this:

There was an old man sitting on his porch watching the rain fall. Pretty soon the water was coming over the porch and into the house.

The old man was still sitting there when a rescue boat came and the people on board said, ”You can’t stay here. You have to come with us.”

The old man replied, “No, God will save me.” So the boat left.

A little while later the water was up to the second floor, and another rescue boat came, and again told the old man that he needed to come with them.

The old man again replied, “No, God will save me.” So the second boat left him again.

An hour later the water was up to the roof and a third rescue boat approached the old man, and tried to get him to come with them.

Again, the old man refused to leave stating that, “God will save me.” So the third boat left him alone once more.

Soon after, the man drowns and goes to heaven, and when he sees God he asks Him, “Why didn’t you save me?”

God replied, “You dummy, I tried. I sent three boats after you!”

___

Now I intended this joke to be funny….as it probably was intended when it was written. But as the day wore on and as I began to think about it more and more, I realized that there is a tremendous amount of truth in the punch line. How many people miss God’s boat or lifeline entirely because they either fail to hear the message or else they disregard it, choosing, instead, to continue forward through life in their own, willful way?

___

Now there are people who look at me like I’ve got three heads when I say that I can hear Him. They assume I must mean that I read His inspired word in the Bible. They don’t think it is possible that He speaks to me, to which my only reply must be Mark 4:9, ‘Then Jesus said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”’ But having ears to hear and really listening are two entirely different things. I listen when He speaks to me because I not only choose to hear but I look to find His messages in the million more subtle things that take place all around me, every single second.

___

Here is a perfect illustration to emphasize the point I am trying for right now. I grew up in small town America, complete with a train station that was no longer used but when I was a child, the train continued riding the tracks all the way from Philadelphia to the Jersey Shore. And yet I never heard its rumble because I was so used to the sound, it became relegated to the background, unheard and unnoticed. However, people visiting one day commented on the clattering noise, which surprised me. But then as I thought about their words,  I began to realize that they were right, and I wondered how it was that I didn’t notice, or even think about the rumble of that train anymore.

___

Just as we develop selective hearing as we grow older, which can be the salvation of any person who has had to learn to cope with the shouts of children’s voices in play, so must we know when the shouts of a child’s play becomes a shout of pain from a skinned knee or other boo boo! Hearing God’s voice is no different. It’s simply a matter being able to distinguish between hearing those things that are pieces of information that we already know and then listening and really embracing those things that have the capacity to be life changing. And I am willing to bet that those are the times He is choosing to speak to you. Yes, remember that it is entirely possible that He is sending you a life boat. Will you recognize it as it sails near and will you know when it is time to step into it?

___

If only you carefully listen to the voice of the Lord your God, to do watchfully all these commandments which I command you this day.

Deuteronomy 15:5

Caring For The Caretaker

___Holding Hands with Elderly Patient

___

Even if it’s a little thing, do something for those who have need of a man’s help, something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.  For, remember, you don’t live in a world all your own.  Your brothers are here too.

Albert Schweitzer

http://www.quotegarden.com/helping.html

___

Until the moment you have cared for someone with Alzheimer’s Disease, it is impossible to fully understand how daunting and all-encompassing a mission this type of caretaking really is. My sister-in-law knows. Her father suffered from this disease. So does Dan’s aunt who looked at the face of Alzheimer’s Disease every time she looked in her husband’s eyes. Dan and I know, having volunteered to become the court appointed guardian of our uncle who was also struck down by this demon disease. It is not just an exhausting mission but it is also often a thankless one, as well.

___

So often I wished that someone…. anyone…. would step in and give us some breathing room! It didn’t happen in time to benefit us but it got the wheels turning in my mind and I have come up with a list (aided by some ideas from AARP Magazine) of some perfect caretaker gifts. Now this idea is perhaps too late for this holiday season but maybe it’s time to think about how to help during the rest of the year, and not just during those special occasions!

___

1. An empathic ear.

Sometimes we wish there was someone….anyone…..who will just take a moment with a warm cuppa, and sit with us and listen. No chiming in, no opinions, no second guessing the decisions we’ve made! Just being there and letting someone know that they are not alone matters…….A LOT!

~

2. Positive reinforcement.

How about telling those special people who carry the heavy load for caring for another that what they do matters and is important? Caretakers know that what they do is right but sometimes we think that others might not see it the same way! I know, that walking a mile in some pretty heavy moccasins, has given me a huge appreciation for everything someone who cares for another undertakes…. whether that someone is a baby, a dying person or someone with a chronic illness!

~

3. Practical help.

I remember the days people told me that I looked tired. I was tired. So is every new mother. So is every person who is caring for someone who is ill or dying! So how about offering that caretaker 2 hours to relax, shop, go bowling, or get a manicure! Just a brief moment where fun and enjoyment occupies the mind rather than worry! Or how about arranging for someone to come in and stay for a time, enabling you to take that friend out to dinner or for coffee and dessert!

~

4. Over the miles.

Not everyone that cares lives next door. My family was spread far and wide across these 50 great states. But a phone call connects hearts in an instant as does the mail. I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t laugh at receiving a “Jokes for the John” book in the mail and while I am not a fan of flowers (allergies) there are many who would welcome the beauty of bringing the outdoors indoors! Or how about some chocolate dipped strawberries or pretzels, as a treat? These are little things, but they all say, “I care”!

___

The things we do for those who give of themselves so selflessly need not be big. They need not be special. They need only provide a smile and remind them that they are being remembered as they travel through a time they would rather forget! Bringing a little joy into the life of someone is one of the greatest gifts we can bestow!

___

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? It is good for nothing anymore, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. “Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

Matthew 5:13-16

Bittersweet Days

The days are much too short, as they always seem to be when the time to say goodbye draws near. But say goodbye we must, because that is the way of the world and of life. It is certainly the way of the human being who waits for the day death will call from the very first moment we draw air into tiny lungs. And while there is never a good time for saying those goodbyes, they are especially bittersweet during the holidays, when we all spend so much time in celebration, and when a time of sadness and of mourning seems so out-of-place. But all of the days of man are numbered, and those days are much too short, as they always seem to be, even when that goodbye is expected or even welcomed.

___

Yesterday was such a time of mixed emotion for my family. We were mourning the loss of a family member…..my brother’s father-in-law, as a matter of fact. And it was time for me to speak. And even as I faced the assembly, the words and emotions were such a struggle. You see, the person we had lost suffered from end stage dementia, and it had been weeks and weeks since he had known his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. He had forgotten so many of the joyous things that had consumed his waking hours before being struck down by this insidious foe. He had forgotten his boat and fishing cronies and he had forgotten his 60th birthday when he was “Roasted” by some of his near and dear friends who knew him so well as a much younger man.

___

What can you say during a such a time that would do his life justice? And then I remembered the place where he now dwells…..a heavenly home where there is no more pain or want or loneliness or despair….a place where each person is vibrant and safe and warm and alive. And then my mind envisioned him in a place where his fishing pole is always baited and the fish are always biting and I needed to smile, because I realized that he was not really home for the years he walked the earth. It was not until the moment that he was carried away on the wings of angels that he was delivered to his true home! Yes, I was smiling and as I spoke, those in the room smiled too!

___

(Jesus’ words)

”Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”

Remember
This December,
That love weighs more than gold!

Josephine Dodge Daskam Bacon

http://www.quotegarden.com/christmas.html

___

Now that Christmas is but a memory, once more, what is next? Do you have a plan for tomorrow and the day after and the day after that? Do you know what God is asking of you? In fact, can you really answer with confidence what it is that pleases God? Hebrews 11:6 NIV says, “without faith it is impossible to please God.”

___

We can believe that what we do or say is what God expects, but never forget that He sees those unseen, and sometimes even unknowns, that lie in the deepest recesses of out hearts. Things, even that which seem to be of the highest importance to the scheme of things here on terra firma, really do not count when God is examining each soul! And while we may believe what we do is pleasing, God’s view of the matter is never that same as man’s! In 1 Samuel 1:67 NIV the Lord says to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

___

Our end goal really is less what we do as long as everything we do in terms of our faith puts us in a position where our faith intersects with God’s faithfulness to us all….His children. That is the key and the magic which transforms us and causes the faith within each heart to burst forth with life and grow!

“O Holy Night”

Celtic Women

http://youtu.be/P3XwA0w732g

___

O Holy Night” (“Cantique de Noël“) is, perhaps, one of the most beautiful and well loved of all of the Christmas carols. Composed by  Adolph Adam in 1847, and it was based on the French poem, “Minuit, chrétiens” (Midnight, Christians) by Placide Cappeau. It was written when Placide was asked by a clergyman to write a poem for Christmas mass. Of course, Luke was his guide as he envisioned the birth of the Christ child in Bethlehem! The popularity of the words prompted the poet to contact a friend who was a musician. Adolph conceived the melody and within a few short weeks, the song was performed at the Midnight mass on Christmas Eve!

___

Here are the lyrics to Placide’s beautiful poem!

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth.

Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;

O night, O holy night, O night divine!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.

O’er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,
Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land.

The King of kings lay thus lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friends.

He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.

Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.

Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,

His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!

___

The poem speaks volumes about the needs mankind has for a Savior to rescue us all from a world that is full of sin! After all, it would be this tiny babe who would bear the cares and sins for all of humanity forever more!

Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.

___

Then Placide goes on to tell us of the qualities Christ would grow to have….the qualities of God but in flesh and not spirit! John 1:14 says, “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

In all our trials born to be our friends.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,

___

Then the words tell us how it is that God desires man to live…..what His expectations are for our behavior! John 13:35, “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” Yes, He expects that we will love Him and each other!

Truly he taught us to love one another,
His law is love and his gospel is peace.
Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother
And in his name all oppression shall cease.

___

We, as a human race, were being given the opportunity, not to be saved from the Hell that our dying would direct us to, but we were also being given, by this gift of God in flesh, that capacity of living fulfilled and abundant lives as we walk upon the earth! Indeed, we were all given the way, the truth and the life by one tiny, little baby! Oh Holy Night, indeed!

___
