I don’t need to lie. But, sometimes, I like to give the truth an extreme makeover.

How many of the people that read my blog overseas have ever heard of the current media darling known as  “Extreme Makeover” that has become the rage here in the states? I don’t know if there is something similar where you are from, but here in the good ole’ U.S.A., people seek to transform everything from their bodies to their cars to their homes. And while it is often an altruistic endeavor, I am certain that there are some who seek to participate in these programs for more selfish reasons. Anyway, here these shows are being filmed from coast to coast. Several years ago, one program dedicated itself to helping to restore a community devastated by Hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans area and the same show filmed two “Extreme Makeover” broadcasts less than 10 miles from where I live, right here in the Myrtle Beach, SC area. Now their stories were indeed sad and both of these families were certainly in need of having assistance with safe and adequate housing. However, whether their story was sad enough or their situation dire enough to truly warrant this blessing continues to be a matter of debate today. Indeed, I have witnessed many more people whose lives would be forever changed by receiving far less than the “over the top” homes that were built right here, and I have often wondered why it is that these programs don’t make a greater effort at spreading the wealth, so to speak, and sharing these miracles of good fortunes with more!

I suppose we will never understand or discover the answer to “why this family or person and not that one”, but I, for one, hope that they truly appreciate these gifts that God has sent their way. But wait a minute! When we think about it, He has gifted us all with an opportunity to have our very own “Extreme Makeover”! After all, wasn’t this exact thing the reason God sent His only begotten son to earth more than 2000 years ago? That tiny baby born in Bethlehem grew up experiencing everything you and I experience with one huge difference……because Jesus was born without sin, the way was paved for Him to bear our sins and then sacrifice Himself so that when our time comes, we will have the opportunity to live in righteousness. Yes, giving an “Extreme Makeover” was what Jesus came to do, but His makeovers are not the kind that you can see or smell or taste or touch. They can only be felt. They are makeovers of the inside…..the place where our heart, soul, conscience and spirit dwell! We know that this is true because God has given man the script for His “Extreme Makeover” show in the form of the Bible. 2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT pretty well sums things up for us. “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”

___

Now in the “Extreme Makeover” shows of man, the price for what is given is paid by someone in coin (or more like thousands upon thousands of dollar bills). In fact, sponsors pay dearly, simply for the publicity that doing something good will afford them. But what is the price to us for our “Extreme Makeover” of the spirit? Well, all we need do is to simply decide for ourselves that this is what we want and then all we need do is ask that God  give it. Matthew 7:7 NIV, reaffirms to us what the cost is. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” And I don’t know about you, but this opportunity for personal transformation, an “Extreme Makeover” of the spirit, is worth much more that any tangible one man can bestow!

___

5) Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.   6) Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.   7) You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’

John 3: 5-7 NIV

Please remember the millions of our brothers and sisters as well as furry companions today who are suffering from the effects of Superstorm Sandy. Give as much as you can, as often as you can to the following organizations or groups.
