Thought For The Day 12/15/12

The Christmas Carol

___

(Ed note: This blog was written and sent to publishing prior to the horrific attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Understanding that faith teaches us that we celebrate the birthday of our Lord and Savior because of the gift He gives to man through His life and substitutionary death, we will allow this post of rejoicing to remain this day’s thought, despite the fact that most of our minds are elsewhere today!)

Christmas Carols

___

The earth has grown old with its burden of care But at Christmas it always is young, The heart of the jewel burns lustrous and fair And its soul full of music breaks the air, When the song of angels is sung.”

 Phillips Brooks

(1835-93)

American Episcopal bishop, wrote ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’

For more than a millennium, men and women both young and old, have gathered together, wherever their feet stand. They gather in homes and churches, in cities and villages, on mountain tops and at the bottom of the sea, to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And since the earliest of times, man has gravitated toward music as a balm for the soul.  Music is a measure of comfort to the lonely, it soothes those who are hurting and it lifts the spirits of the sorrowful! In fact, we know that some of the earliest recorded musical lyrics have been given to man from the book of Psalms. They were written then as a means of giving thanks and praise to God for His blessings, and it is this very same connection that ties the joy of celebrating this time of the year with the Psalms we sing in praise and remembrance of the arrival of that tiny baby so long ago!

___

It is thought that the history of the Christmas carol began with the hymn, ‘O come, Redeemer of the Earth’ or Veni redemptor gentium, which was composed sometime in the 4th century and is attributed to St Ambrose, (c. 330 – 4 April 397), whose contribution of doctrine was so essential to the early church, that he is referred to (along with Saint Augustine, Saint Jerome, and Pope Gregory I) as one of the Four Great Doctors of the Western Church. However, it was during the 13th century, and with the encouragement of St Francis of Assisi, that the tradition of singing Christmas carols began to really take root throughout Europe. And while some of the carols we are the most familiar with today bear the more secular tale of Yuletide and Santa, the most popular of all of the Christmas carols remain those whose roots are religious in nature and share the story of Jesus’ birth!

I have chosen ten songs that celebrate the best part of Christmas and which just might be my very favorite of all time and I have included the YouTube link for you to click, should you want to experience this magic for yourselves. The voices that sing them are as diverse as are the songs themselves. From Olivia Newton John to Ella Fitzgerald, from Josh Groban to Michael Fawcett, from Celtic Women to the Harlem Gospel Choir, all of them resonate with the special magic that can only be experienced during this special time of the year!

During this most blessed season of the year, please remember the millions of our brothers and sisters  who continue to suffer from the effects of Superstorm Sandy. Give as much as you can, as often as you can to the following organizations. Your gift might just mean a family who has lost everything might just have something to smile about this Christmas!
