Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.

There can be no words that I can write today that weave their magic quite the same way the Bible does, when it comes to describing the birth of the Christ Child. This is especially true when those words are shared using the beautifully melodic lilt of the King James Version of the passages! So sit back, and read the story the way it was intended to be read, and paint a masterpiece in your mind of this miracle and gift that was given to mankind!

___

Luke 2:1-20

1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

“A Christmas Reflection”

by

Michael Fawcett

___

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.
Isaiah 9:6-7

Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.

Norman Vincent Peale

http://www.quotegarden.com/christmas.html

___

It is, indeed the time of the year when the world fills with cheer! People are just little a bit nicer. People smile just a bit more. People find themselves humming to the catchy holiday tunes piped throughout our stores. People find it within, to instinctively help their neighbor, remembering a couple of the greatest messages we have been given: that it is necessary to love each other as much as we love ourselves and that giving, especially with a cheerful heart, provides us with such joy!

___

We are finally in the New Jersey and New York area, sharing the holidays with some of our family that we see all too infrequently! We will be like many travelers at this time of the year….trying to cram a million things into five minutes….and we will love every single second. We will take Landon to see Santa and his village where his grandma saw Santa and his village when she was a little girl! We will enjoy life…the parties and the food and the special love that hometown and family brings! And we will say our goodbyes and cry when it is done but we will forever hold within our hearts, the memories of times that are once in a lifetime!

___

This is the magic of the promises that were given to man by the birth of that tiny baby 2000 years ago! It is the magic that was heralded to man by angels singing joyfully from the heavens. It is the magic that was lighted by the blinding beams from a heavenly star. It is the magic that wise men traveled miles to witness first hand. It is the magic that a little drummer boy celebrated with his song. It is the golden tie that unites our hearts and lives with the hearts and lives of a simple carpenter and his wife and their son! It is the magic of family!

___

“But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”

Still Here? OK, What’s Next?

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.

Eleanor Roosevelt

___

Since you all are reading this, I guess you already know that the Mayans made a HUGE Booboo! Then again, for people of faith, this was no surprise since we know that only the Almighty has knowlege of when and how each soul will be called to judgement. Now I hope that you were optimistic enough about the liklihood that mankind would be here today to witness the sun rising that you did not forgo paying your bills nor did you make a decision to rid yourself of all of your worldly posessions! If you did, you may well be scrambling to rebuild your lives today! Yes, not everyone in the world may have emerged from this trial of the “Mayan’s 12/21/12” unscathed, but I believe the vast majority of you opted to rely on your faith and what your hearts told you would be the outcome.

___

Our faith teaches us that it is His course for the journey of life we each travel that matters rather than one we set ourselves, although He also expects that we be willing to begin the journey ourselves….one step at a time! I hope that you all are leading lives that work for you and provide you with much more than the simple act of breathing! I hope that you have a chosen a mission or purpose for your existence. But should you feel that this scare has brought you to a crossroads, and that there are changes you want to effect for the life you are leading, do you know which way you will turn? Will you choose a path that leads nowhere, or will you actively seek to discover a new direction for the life you are leading? What things will help you to decide?

___

I was able to give the matter some thought as I spent the last 10+ hours in the car enroute to Staten Island, where we are celebrating Christmas with my son and daughter-in-law for the first time in nearly 12 years….a celebratory visit that is long overdue! But riding in a car and having an opportunity for some meaningful reflection undisturbed by many of the influences that face us at home every day, can be a very liberating and cleansing experience. And I have created a list of what might just prove to be “Food For Thought” for developing a game plan of personal reinvention!

___

  • Spend some time in personal reflection and decide if both time and need is dictating that the time for change is NOW!
  • If you believe the time is right, develope an outline, even if it’s a mental one, which defines what you want to see happen with your life!
  • Examine honestly both your strengths as well as your weaknesses, which will impace the changes you want to effect.
  • Remain confident in your own worth and ability to achieve your goals.
  • Always remember to roll with the punches! Often your first attempt may well not be yout last! Reinventing yourself is a process and it does not happen over night. But when it happens, and it’s a right move, you will be forever changed!

____

This was exactly the process I implemented when I discovered I was being led to explore my faith. Some members of my family thought I had lost my mind, and probably were ready to call the men in those “little white coats”. But it was my choice and my decision. They would need to accept my choice, even if they never understood it. And that was just fine with me! Because the bottom line is that faith is a personal choice and a commitment between only two beings….each human being and God! I didn’t want to just pay my faith lip service. I wanted, instead, to act on what I was being called to do! James 1:25 ESV, says it perfectly! “But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”

___

For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

Matthew 7:8 ESV

The Countdown Is On!

___

The  mark of your ignorance is the depth of your belief in injustice and tragedy.  What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the Master calls the  butterfly.

Richard Bach

http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/end_of_the_world.html

___

There are some people who have chosen to give up all of their worldly possessions. There are yet others who have packed up kith and kin and headed for a remote retreat in the western SC mountains (an article about this very thing was on the front page of today’s newspaper)! And then there are families, like ours, who will go about our normal daily living, as if nothing will happen…..at least not yet.

___

Yes, I know the predictions that the book of Revelations tells us about. Yes, I know of the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”. Yes, I have heard the analogies between the events as foretold and the events that are occurring in our modern-day culture which are supposed proof positive indicators that the predictions are coming true. And yes, I do understand how we have come to associate the ending of the Mayan calendar with the supposed ending of times. I even know about Nostradamus’ predictions, although his  quatrains never focused on 2012 in particular.  However, while I am certain that we do, as a world, exist as living beings on borrowed time, I do not think that it will be today that all are called to judgement!

___

No human alive truly knows the when nor do we know the how. That is a secret held closely to, and known only by God! The proof of this is clear in Mark 13:32 NIV, which says, “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” And whether the world ends tomorrow or in a thousand years or in a million years, I will live my life until my life is over and then, because I know Jesus and have accepted him, I also know where it is my immortal soul will dwell! How about you?

___

But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

What Is To Blame?

___

dear-god

http://www.picshag.com/dear-god.html

___

“Here I bow my head to pray
But not to MY GOD, I am ashamed to say
For He is not sanctioned by the state
So some other prayer I must make.

It all started out so well and good
‘Put God Back In School’ we said we would
But then the society around us changed
The ‘official’ God now has a different name.

We were warned, but we couldn’t wait
To abolish the separation of church and state
Because the majority was on our side
Our religion was worshiped far and wide.

But the world grew smaller as years went by
And others moved in as we began to cry.
‘They don’t believe the same as we do!’
Suddenly, our decision we began to rue.

Politicians in office now had a different God.
They vowed to make us follow Him, they would.
And since the state now decides our belief
We can blame only ourselves for our grief.

So now I bow my head to pray
And wish I could go back to that day
When we didn’t know what we would lose
And I could worship the God I choose.”

There is an email that has been circulating throughout the internet since the shootings that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, CT, 7 days ago. Although it appears that this speech, made by Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Joy Scott — a student killed in the 1999 shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, was just given recently before the Senate Subcommittee on Crime, it was, in fact, given on May 27, 1999, just a few short months after he lost his daughter. However, his words are just as significant and impactful today, as they were 13 years ago, and they are well worth hearing and remembering, despite the fact that his words, and the words of other Columbine parents, did not receive very much media coverage, at the time!

___

Since that time, and spurred on in part by writings in the notebooks and diaries left behind by his daughter, Mr. Scott — the son of an Episcopalian minister (though he himself is adamantly non-denominational), quit his job, set up a non-profit organization called The Columbine Redemption, and embarked on a grueling schedule of speaking engagements all across the United States to spread this message. The following is a portion of the transcript of his address in Washington.

___

“Since the dawn of creation there has been both good & evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers.

“The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used.. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain’s heart.

“In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA – because I don’t believe that they are responsible for my daughter’s death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel’s murder I would be their strongest opponent

I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy — it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best.

~

Your laws ignore our deepest needs,
Your words are empty air.
You’ve stripped away our heritage,
You’ve outlawed simple prayer.
Now gunshots fill our classrooms,
And precious children die.
You seek for answers everywhere,
And ask the question “Why?”
You regulate restrictive laws,
Through legislative creed.
And yet you fail to understand,
That God is what we need!

~

“Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, mind, and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and wreak havoc. Spiritual presences were present within our educational systems for most of our nation’s history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact. What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine’s tragedy occurs — politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws. Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts.

“As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes, he did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right! I challenge every young person in America , and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA — I give to you a sincere challenge.. Dare to examine your own heart before casting the first stone!
My daughter’s death will not be in vain! The young people of this country will not allow that to happen!”

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.

And  I DO BELIEVE that it is this Christmas LOVE that we carry forth and share with others throughout the year, that has the capacity to work its very own miracle on each and every heart, each and every single day, all year through! Accountability

___

accountability

___

“We must reject the idea that every time a law’s broken, society is guilty rather than the law-breaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.”

Ronald Reagan

http://www.wow4u.com/accountable-quotes/index.html

___

How many of us know the definition of the word accountability? I know we all have heard the word and we may have used it in our dealings with another whose shortcomings are being scrutinized! But how many of us think about being accountable for our own actions as we live our lives?

___

My need to ask this question was prompted by the decision made by a professional sports team to allow a team member to be on the sidelines just a week after a purposeful decision he made to drive drunk resulted in a fiery crash that claimed the life of a fellow teammate. Now I realize that this action was taken, in part, due to words the mother of the victim has offered in support of this young man who was her son’s best friend, and who will need to forever live with the memory of the consequences of the action he took. However, I must wonder if the message this action, on the part of this football team franchise, sends to the world, is really the message we want both the world, and our youngsters who look to these athletes as role models, to see!

___

Accountability is a checks and balances system that is put in place to protect us from harming both other people as well as ourselves! And being accountable, while allowing us to be supportive of the positive actions we, or another, accomplish in life, also provides for censure as well as consequences when the things we do break the laws of either man or God! The problem is that when we allow someone to “skate” in terms of the consequences we choose to impose for a wrongdoing, especially when the unthinkable occurs, we are enabling them to miss out on the part that says we must truly atone for the harm we have caused another. And while it may be a bit easier to reconcile this type of response to an act of malfeasance in the secular world, it is not quite as easy when it comes to matters of faith!

___

We all must understand that every action we make and take as we live our lives, causes us to be responsible and answerable to God. We are told as much over and over in God’s little handbook of life….the Bible! Galatians 6: 1-2 NIV, says, “Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” And James 15:16 NIV adds, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

___

It is easy to stand erect when those who should be outraged by the sin we have committed stand by and support us. It is much a more difficult task to accomplish when we do not have another to lean upon. But to stand and admit our culpability for the things we have done is a must if we are ever to go on and seek true forgiveness….a forgiveness which we need if we are going to continue to look ourselves in the mirror every day. Now I am not seeking to judge with these words I write today. Only one is given that absolute power, and it is not any who dwells in human form. In fact, we are all forgiven already for our sins if we accept that Christ lived and died to give us that gift! But knowing we are forgiven by God, and to be able to forgive and live with ourselves, are two entirely different things. And unless and until we elect to hold ourselves accountable for the actions we take, will we ever, really, be able to forgive ourselves?

___

10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames..”

1 Corinthians 3: 10-15 NIV

During this most blessed season of the year, please remember the millions of our brothers and sisters who continue to suffer from the effects of Superstorm Sandy. Give as much as you can, as often as you can to the following organizations. Your gift might just mean a family who has lost everything might just have something to smile about this Christmas!
