Thought For The Day 03/15/13

Standing On The Promises

I have found that there are three stages in every great work of God: first, it is impossible, then it is difficult, then it is done.

Hudson Taylor

We all make promises to others nearly every day. And yet, how many of those promises do we really intend to keep? I know that I have made a promise or two or ten thousand over the last 50 plus years that I intended to keep. I made them in good faith, based on my life and my circumstances at the time I made them. And yet, I broke my word. And sometimes it was circumstance that forced my hand in a way I did not want it to go. But more often than not, it was because, in my all too humanness, I was weak and I failed the person to whom I offered my heartfelt promise! And then I began to think about all of the promises that God gives to us and suddenly, I couldn’t help but wonder whether He ever fails us in what He promises. And therein lies a question. Do we trust more in God’s promises to us or our promises to Him? “

We are human. We think with the mind of a human being and we feel with the heart of a human being. And as much as we might sometimes think and hope that our thoughts, actions and behaviors are above reproach, they are not. We are an entitled and snobbish generation of “I wants” who live the way we choose to and not the way we need to! And as much as it saddens me to say this, we have, indeed, reduced our promises to others as well as to God as trifles that we remember when it is convenient for us to do so. And it is this attitude that further reduces what it is that our faith is designed to do…..transform the human heart! Which makes me wonder if English author, G.K. Chesterton (whose quotes I have used several times in the past) was correct when he said, “We do not really want a religion that is right where we are right. What we want is a religion that is right where we are wrong.” You see I think we want religion and God when we are right, but we NEED religion and God when we are wrong. And that is what those broken promises should be reminding us about.

God, on the other hand, ALWAYS keeps His promises. We can rely on them and seek comfort in their intent at all times. However, remember that while His promises are always clear, His counsel to us comes at the time of His choosing, which sometimes makes us think that He is forsaking us when we need Him the most! God has a time and place and a season for everything! “To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 NKJV. And while we humans sometimes have exceedingly short memories when we offer our promises to others, God’s promises to you are exactly the same as His promises to me, and they are exactly the same as they have been since the moment humankind was created! And should you need a little nudge to remind you what some of them are, here are 10 scriptures to read and remember always!

10 Scriptures About God’s Promises

2 Peter 1:4

And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

Jeremiah 29:11

Matthew 11:28-29

Isaiah 40:29-31

He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

Philippians 4:19

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:37-39

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Proverbs 1:33

But all who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm.”

John 14:27

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

Romans 10:9

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
