Never believe that true prayer consists in mere babbling, reciting so many psalms and vigils, saying your beads while you allow your thoughts to roam.

THE APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary:
Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried:
He descended into hell:
The third day he rose again from the dead:
He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead:
I believe in the Holy Ghost:
I believe in the holy catholic church:
The communion of saints:
The forgiveness of sins:
The resurrection of the body:
And the life everlasting.

Amen.

For the Jewish people, this was the Sabbath and a day of rest and this is as it should be for us as well, as we await with all reverence and awe, the miracle that tomorrow brings! But for today, it is a mournful day…a day of death.

___

Remembering the words from the Apostles Creed, look closely at the fifth line (“He descended into Hell”). Omitted from the Apostles Creed of many Protestant denominations, this line from the original (and still maintained in most Orthodox and Roman Catholic versions), reminds us of the time, this very day 2000 years ago, in fact, when our Lord remained suspended between the two worlds.

___

The first is the world of darkness of which sin and death remain a part of life, and afterlife for mankind…the time before the gift of salvation was promised. The second is the world of light when the gift of His resurrection would restore to mankind the promises of a life everlasting which was lost at the beginning by the sin in the Garden! Indeed, it is the world in which He is and always will be, the “Light of the World”.

___

It is a quiet day. It is a day of contemplation and prayer and remembering all of the components of God’s laws and promises that comprise what it is that faith means for each of us. It is a time to look into our hearts and to decide what we hope to give back to the world, just as Christ gave to us. It is a time to remember some of the greatest teachings shared by the Son, where great truths were given in the simplest of ways…..through His parables and especially, in what we know as “The Beatitudes” which is an integral part of what we know as “The Sermon on the Mount”!

Matthew 5:1-12 NIV

5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes

He said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
