Thought For The Day 04/06/13

Strength In Numbers

United We Stand

If we find ourselves increasing beyond example in numbers, in strength, in wealth, in knowledge, in everything which promotes human and social happiness, let us ever remember our dependence for all these on the protection and merciful dispensations of Divine Providence.
John Tyler

“Strength in Numbers” and “United We Stand”. Two concepts that may be different in words and yet their meaning as linked as are the genetics of identical twins! Yes, everything starts with the one first and foremost, but it is through the actions of the one that we become the many! For example, we know that when the one speaks out, loud and proud, others listen and sometimes, embrace and run with the ideas whose seeds once sown, have taken root. Need further proof? Just think about the life of the Son of God.

The seeds were already within Him at birth, just waiting to take root under the careful nurturing of parents who understood that His very presence was miraculous. However even the Son knew that for His mission to be accomplished, He would need to sow the seeds of a new promise to others who would share the journey with Him and then carry it forth, when His living would be no more. You see, Jesus knew that just as man can not live without companionship with others of his kind, so will faith within wither and die if not brought forth and shared with many!

How do we do this, you ask? Must we take a seminar and learn the specialized techniques for public speaking? Must we go out and knock on doors like some churches do, handing out tracts and preaching to strangers? Well I don’t know about you, but techniques like this make me want to head for the hills. We actually sometimes make evangelism much more complicated than it needs to be. Yes, I respect those who choose to stand on a street corner and read from the Bible and praise His name. But the reality is that those who will honestly change their way of thinking and yes, believing, do so because of what they see in the way we live, in the way we express our love for others and in the things we do to show that we care.

Words are merely that….things that when combined in some manner, convey an idea. But take away the words and what is left is the feeling that we intend and what we hold within each heart. And that is the single most important tool we hold in our hand as we seek to share His message. But just because we choose to express faith through actions does not mean that faith lacks purpose and definition. It is as alive, real and ever evolving, especially as we seek to increase our understanding of what constitutes our relationship with God. If we have no faith, we are merely Christians in word alone, rather than Christians in heart, mind, soul and in deed!

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

Galatians 5:22-23 NIV
