The Greatest Sermon Ever Preached
The Sermon on the Mount. It is perhaps the greatest sermon ever delivered by any person. But do you know what exactly comprises this exquisitely beautiful discourse? Well, it is a collection of moral teachings that Christ delivered early in His ministry (shortly after His Baptism and days in Galilee). It comprises the 5th, 6th and 7th chapters in the Gospel of Matthew and it is, perhaps, the most frequently quoted of any of His teachings. It includes the universally known, 8 Beatitudes, and the Lord’s Prayer!
Matthew 5: 3-10
Blessed are…the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
Blessed are….those who mourn: for they will be comforted.
Blessed are…the meek: for they will inherit the earth
Blessed are….those who hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they will be filled.
Blessed are…the merciful: for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are…the pure in heart: for they will see God.
Blessed are…the peacemakers: for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are…those who are persecuted for because of righteousness: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
The Lord’s Prayer
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.
The final verse of the 5th Chapter of Matthew serves to act as both a summary of them all and a caveat as to what is expected from those who will choose to follow this burgeoning religion called Christianity! Matthew 5:48 says, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect,” because it is this which serves as the core tenets for Christians everywhere and it is the path to perfection that leads all to the Kingdom of God! And how appropriate it is considering that this gift that was the reason Christ was conceived, born, lived and died, in the first place, isn’t it?
As I was looking at material to guide me in this post, I discovered a wonderful video on You Tube which is a clip from something called, “The Visual Bible”. I am sharing the video of “The Sermon on the Mount”, which they offer to be seen, and enjoyed, by us all! 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
30 I and my Father are one.
