A Firefighter’s Prayer

When I’m called to duty god
wherever flames may rage
give me strength to save a life
whatever be its age

Help me to embrace a little child
before it is too late
or save an older person from
the horror of that fate

Enable me to be alert
to hear the weakest shout
and quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out

I want to fill my calling and
to give the best in me
to guard my neighbor and
protect his property

And if according to your will
I have to lose my life
bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife

If Prometheus was worthy of the wrath of heaven for kindling the first fire upon earth, how ought all the Gods to honour the men who make it their professional business to put it out?

John Godfrey Saxe
circa 1850

Today there have been a billion tears shed. In fact, we have wept more than our share in the past few months, and all due to tragedies few of us could have foreseen. None of us saw the troubled pair of brothers in time to stop the loss of life and maiming in Boston. None of us foresaw the troubled young man who forever changed the lives of elementary school children in December. And today, we weep because none of us could have possibly foreseen the sudden shifting of winds that trapped 19 young firefighters in an inferno that was raging out of control in Arizona. In fact, not since 9/11/01 have we mourned the loss of life of as many brave heroes like this in a single day! And while we can not ease the grief of their families barely 48 hours after being given the worst news a human being can be given, we can say a Thank You for their sacrifice and we can ask God that he spare us from something like this ever happening again. But I suspect His answer will be the same it always is when we ask the hard question,Why! Because all we will be told is Why Not andI Am that I Am” or ( אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה), from Exodus 3:14.

So what does it take to be a hero? There is a commercial that was aired often a year or so ago, that showed people simply doing a caring deed, the act of which was paid forward by each person helped. The deeds were not great ones, but simple, everyday, acts of kindness, by one human being to another. And while the acts are not what most of us think of when we envision a hero, still, this is most definitely, the kind of hero most of us can be! We can all choose to be kind, and considerate, and thoughtful and respectful to everyone. The “hero gene” kind of hero that most firefighters seem to have? Few will ever know the answer to that until or unless the need to step up in that capacity arises. But I like to think that somewhere, deep inside, that “hero gene” lays hidden in all of us, only to surface when it will be needed the most!

“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness..”

Romans 12:6-8 ESV
