I am a devoted subscriber of “GodVine” (http://www.godvine.com/), which is a Christian website featuring both faith-based and secular feel good videos and stories! The purpose is to show the glory of God’s creations and blessings when often, all we seem to see is life’s unsavory side. So several months ago, I began sharing a story on my social media site from this GodVine because the messages contained are generally, so profound, that there is always some inspiration contained that will help you to begin your day feeling good and wearing a smile on your face! So it should not be a surprise that it was this site where I found the story I’m going to share with you, today! The author is unknown but I am certain that you will never forget the message once you’ve read the words!

THE SILENT SERMON

Author Unknown

~

A member of a certain church who previously had been attending services regularly, stopped going. After a few weeks, the pastor decided to visit him. It was a chilly evening. The pastor found the man at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for the pastor’s visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited.

___

The pastor made himself at home but said nothing. In the grave silence he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After some minutes, the pastor took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone then he sat back in his chair, still silent.

___

The host watched all this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember’s flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead.

___

Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. The pastor glanced at his watch and realized it was time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow, once more, with the light and warmth of the coals around it.

___

As the pastor reached the door to leave, his host said with a tear running down his cheek, “Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the fiery sermon. I will be back in church next Sunday”!

___

We live in a world today, which tries to say too much with too little. Consequently, few listen. How wonderful it is to be reminded that words are simply that…..letters put together. It’s not until they are given a context that their meaning takes on a true message. And how wonderful was the wisdom of that pastor whose message was crystal clear…..with absolutely no words used. Can the rest of us make a claim such as this?
