Not The Quantity Of The Time

Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of intelligent effort.

There are mornings I look in the mirror when I’m brushing my teeth and, for the briefest of moments, I wonder what kind of mischief I can manage today. Yes indeed, Mandy has a darker side, which takes every ounce of strength to keep in check! And I am fairly certain that, I am not the exception to the rule! Yes, if we are really honest with ourselves, we all have thought, said or done things, that we are not proud of, and in response to that admission, all I can say is, “Welcome to the human race”. We are human and we all sin!! Or as we are told in Romans 3:23 KJV, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God..”

It’s not easy living as a Christian in today’s world. Times are difficult and with the struggles to pay for life’s essentials such as food, housing and clothing consuming so much of our daily existence, hearts that once knew love and charity, and yes, even faith, have become emptied of these things. And I must wonder if this is also the reason that dynamics of intact family units which were so typical in past decades, have become lost in an age when 12 hour work days in dual income families or single parent households, are the norm rather than the exception. How many times do we find our children returning home from school to empty homes and a lack of parental supervision?

It’s a growing trend in American society that weekends are seen as ours….a time to rest, relax, recharge and rejuvenate. Families (no matter how the word is defined) do things together on weekends since this is the only opportunity to do so, and while this “family time” is important, when it infringes on a time for devotion to God, we have made a mistake. God designated a day of rest not because he needed rest and not really so we could get rest, but so that we would have some time away from the stresses of work to remember Him and to explore and discover the wonder of who He is and how this impacts our lives. Now this need not happen inside a “brick and mortar” church building on a Sunday morning. The important thing is to take some time, and set it apart from that me time, and make it a “He” time! All we need do is sit, if even for a few minutes, and think about Him and the blessings He has graced us with. What matters most is the quality of the time we have devoted, not the quantity of the time!

___

Are there a myriad of other ways we can remember and give back to God for all He has blessed us with? Absolutely. Think about the “do unto others” verse from Matthew 7:12 KJV, “So in everything, do unto others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” We must strive to give to others. We can choose to keep a joyful heart and share the gift of happiness with everyone around us. We can gift others by our caring about them. And we can generously offer hope to those for whom hope is waning. By taking our blessings and spreading them around we are truly living a life that honors Him and all that He has bestowed upon us!

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. …”

James 2:14-18 ESV
