I never force myself to be devout except when I feel so inspired, and never compose hymns of prayers unless I feel within me real and true devotion.

I discovered today’s musical group when I received one of their songs as a birthday gift…..sort of! Someone I greatly admire, shared “Entertaining Angels” on my wall for me to enjoy, back on my 59th birthday. And while I had heard of this contemporary Christian rock band, the Newsboys, I never really listened to the lyrics of any of their songs for their meaning, before that day. Well, they sure left an impression. So much, in fact, that I am sharing my birthday gift with you, today!

___

“Entertaining Angels” , the concept of which was influenced by the Bible verse Hebrews 13:2originally released as a single for radio play, became the lead single in the Newsboy’s album “Step Up To The Microphone”. It was self-produced by the band, and it has become a Christian pop/rock hit,  ranking No. 1 for three consecutive weeks on the Christian Hit Radio chart. “Entertaining Angels” won the 1999 Dove for “Short Form Music Video of the Year”.

___

The Newsboys hail from Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia, and you will note their distinctive accent throughout this wonderful song. Peter Furler, the co-founder of the group along with his school “mate” George Perdikis, is credited with conceiving this song, and, although he is no longer with the band, they will be forever marked by his powerful influence. Lyrically, the song’s theme centers around the rejoicing of heaven’s angels whenever a sinner turns to God.

___

Still active 29 years later, the Newsboys have released 16 studio albums, six of which have been certified gold. Currently, the band consists of lead vocalist Michael Tait, keyboardist Jeff Frankenstein, guitarist Jody Davis (co writer of today’s song), and drummer Duncan Phillips.

ENTERTAINING ANGELS

One to another
Do you remember me?
I feel so small
Well, are you listening tonight?

So temporary
The things that I have seen
I ran so far
Will you take me back again?

Entertaining angels
By the light of my TV screen
24-7, you wait for me
Entertaining angels
By the time I fall to my knees
Host of heaven, sing over me

One to another
The feelings in between
I won’t let go
Of all you taught me alright

Close as a brother
The way we used to be
I’ll hold my breath
And I’ll wait for you to breathe

Entertaining angels
By the light of my TV screen
24-7, you wait for me
Entertaining angels
While the night becomes history
Host of heaven, sing over me

Entertaining angels
By the light of my TV screen
24-7, you wait for me
Entertaining angels
By the time I fall to my knees
Host of heaven, sing over me

Entertaining angels
By the light of my TV screen
24-7, you wait for me
Entertaining angels
While the night becomes history
Host of heaven, sing over me

Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.
