I think the amazing thing about gospel music is that not only does it lift up the death and resurrection of our Lord, which is consistent with the Gospel, but it is uniquely communicated depending upon the generation.

Maranatha! is the combination of two Aramaic words, מרנא תא (“marana tha”) or מרן אתא (“maran atha”) and means either “Come our Lord” or “Our Lord has come”. It can be found only once in the Bible (1 Corinthians 16:22 ESV If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come! ), but it can be seen in the 50 person choir known as the Maranatha! Singers.

Established in the early 70’s as part of an evangelical outreach program of Christian Churches, the group, composed of students from the University of Florida and Sante’ Fe Community College,  is a part of the University Methodist Church and Student Center (U.U.M.C.), Gainesville, Florida. And while the group primarily performs during Sunday worship, make no mistake about the extent of their impact!

The Maranatha! Singers have released 20 “Praise” albums, 27 “Colours”  instrumental music albums, and 8 albums in their “Sanctuary Series”. In 1990 they were awarded the “NATIONAL RELIGIOUS BROADCASTERS” President’s award and in 1991, they were awarded  the Lifetime Achievement Award by the “GOSPEL MUSIC ASSOCIATION”.

Today’s song is “Lord, I Lift Your Name on High”. Written in 1989 by Rick Founds, it was conceived while Rick was reading scriptures on his computer. He was plucking his guitar strings at the same time, and his mind focused on the cycle of redemption (comparing it with the water cycle). And from 1997-2003. this song was listed as the most popular song to be played in church services.

LORD, I LIFT YOUR NAME ON HIGH

performed by the Maranatha! Singers

written by Rick Founds

You came from Heaven to earth
To show the way
From the earth to the Cross
My debt to pay
From the Cross to the grave
From the grave to the sky
Lord, I lift Your name on high

You came from Heaven to earth
To show the way
From the earth to the Cross
My debt to pay
From the Cross to the grave
From the grave to the sky
Lord, I lift Your name on high

You came from Heaven to earth
To show the way
From the earth to the Cross
My debt to pay
From the Cross to the grave
From the grave to the sky
Lord, I lift Your name on high

Lord, I lift Your name on high
Lord, I love to sing Your praises
I’m so glad you’re in my life
I’m so glad you came to save us

You came from Heaven to earth
To show the way
From the earth to the Cross
My debt to pay
From the Cross to the grave
From the grave to the sky
Lord, I lift Your name on high

Lord, I lift Your name on high
Lord, I love to sing Your praises
I’m so glad you’re in my life
I’m so glad you came to save us

You came from Heaven to earth
To show the way
From the earth to the Cross
My debt to pay
From the Cross to the grave
From the grave to the sky
Lord, I lift Your name on high

You came from Heaven to earth
To show the way
From the earth to the Cross
My debt to pay
From the Cross to the grave
From the grave to the sky
Lord, I lift Your name on high

Lord, I lift your name
I lift your name on high
On high, on high

You are holy
You are holy
You are holy, my God

You are holy
You are holy
You are holy, my God

You are holy
You are holy
You are holy, my God

You are awesome
You are awesome
You are awesome

Bring your freedom
Bring your freedom
Bring your freedom

Bring your freedom
Bring your freedom
Bring your freedom, oh Lord

You are holy
You are holy
You are holy

You are holy
You are holy
You are holy, my God

You are holy
You are holy
You are holy, my God

You are holy
You are holy
You are holy, my God

My care, my strength
And my song, and my all
My King, my God
My song, my strength

Sing, Jesus, Jesus
Jesus, Jesus
Jesus, Jesus
Jesus, Jesus

  1. Someone else worth mentioning is Brian Doerksen who wrote ‘Come, Now is the Time to Worship’ and Fortress 144 (based on Psalm 144). I was at his live concerts for the Today DVD of his many years ago. He featured his disabled sons and honoured his band leader father. He also wrote about about how he came to write some of his better known songs. I had no idea he was a ‘local yokel’. His life is his testimony.
