Thought For The Day 12/17/13

A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.

Oscar Wilde

This is the time of the year that we are all assaulted by a myriad of Christmas movies. And almost all of them are sappy, feel good, grab a hold of that box of tissues, type of movies. In other words, they are right up my alley. Yes, I am one who just loves to be transported away from my reality and into a wonderland where the ending is always happy and you just know that the love affair will be a “for ever after” one.

Now do not for a single moment  think that this means that I want to change one iota of my real, true, everyday existence with my very own Prince Charming, because I don’t. It’s just kind of fun to live vicariously for a brief moment, in the persona of another. Yes, the day dreams we experience by these types of movies, are very much like the alter-existence that our night-time dreams gift to us!

Our DREAMS….. a mystery in which our reality lurks in the background….as if merely a wisp of fog hovering a few feet above the ground. But the fabric of the rest of those dreams is also but a glimpse of the things our sub conscious wrestles with. In other words, I think of them as God’s way of allowing us to put the things that haunt our living out there for us to recognize, to conquer and to finally lay to rest!

Have you ever noticed that you often arise from a night of vivid dreaming clear-headed and ready to conquer the world? Notice that the nagging questions that were part of yesterday’s living, while not exactly answered, are no longer bothersome to the future that awaits? If that is not a gift of divine intervention, then I am hard pressed to think of another!

Dreams have always been thought of as God’s connection to man. I once read of Elihu, a man who spoke out in defense of God to those who were much older and wiser….including Job. And it is he that is credited with the words in this verse from the book of Job (33:14-17 NIV), about dreams. “For God does speak—now one way, now another— though no one perceives it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds, he may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings, to turn them from wrongdoing and keep them from pride…”

God warned Pharaoh in Genesis 41 of an impending famine. He warned Abimelech in Genesis 20 of refraining from the temptation to commit adultery with Sarah, the wife of Abraham. And lest you think that these portents lie solely in the early books, remember Acts 2:17 NIV, “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.”

Our cellular network and our internet are not the only ways of communicating with others, nor is simple word of mouth speech. No, our dreams can often share with us some profound lessons if we but seek to remember them and heed the message they seek to convey. Yes for better or for worse, our dreams might just be God’s telephone connection to each one of us!

Then the Lord replied:

“Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end  and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.”

Habakkuk 2:2-3 NIV
