Thought For The Day 12/21/13

Wise Men And Women

Post # 1009

There is a funny saying that begins something like this….. If the Three Wise Men had been Three Wise Women:

1) They would have asked for directions before they arrived.

2) They would have arrived in time and been there to deliver the baby.

3) They would have cleaned the stable, brought practical gifts, like diapers, baby wipes and a casserole.

4) They would have managed to accomplish the greatest miracle of all… Peace on Earth!

Now we know that this is merely a “tongue in cheek” take on the assumption that women, by their very natures, are more domestic, are better organized, intuitively know what needs doing and are willing to accept the fact that not everything in life can be accomplished without asking for a little help from both friends and strangers. However there is also something else very significant in thinking about the wisdom of the Magi….whether or not you believe them to exist in male or female form. And that is that even today, wise men and women still follow that very same baby who, once upon a time, was wrapped in swaddling clothes and who was placed in a bed of fresh hay in the manger.

The Magi were truly wise, despite the fact that they were NOT followers of God. Still, they were able to read the signs in the heavens and apply that to what they did know of the Jewish scriptures. Yes, they knew they were seeking a King! They knew He would change the world! (Matthew 2:1-2 NIV, “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.”) And while they may not have known of all he would give to man one day, we do! We know and understand that this single act of God’s gift to us is our second chance. Christ’s unselfish love, became the propitiation for the sin of the world. (Colossians 2:9 NASB, “For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form…”)

Oh yes, He is still hated by many just as He was hated by Herod, who actually lied to the Magi in the hopes that they would lead him to the child so that he might kill this future King and ultimate Savior. Even today, it is this same mindset, infected by Christ’s opposite, who strive to undermine the faith of Christians by speaking untruths as if they are absolutes. But just as the Magi did (Matthew 2:12 KJV, “And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.”), so must we turn our backs on those who would try to diminish our faith. BECAUSE we DO know the truth. And it is to this that we must cling to and remember as we celebrate this most important day each and every year! Yes indeed, wise men and women still seek Him out and follow His teachings!

“For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Isaiah 9:6 NKJV
