“In the space between yes and no, there’s a lifetime. It’s the difference between the path you walk and the one you leave behind; it’s the gap between who you thought you could be and who you really are; its the leg room for the lies you’ll tell yourself in the future.”

Jodi Picoult

I have been thinking back to those early days of my transformation from one who doubted to one whose belief became absolute. And I realized that this transformation could not have become a reality without a change in the one fundamental that rests inside each of us…..our heart! No, not the one that beats but the one that directs our actions and behaviors, according to the moral compass that awakens in each human being, the moment we draw breath.

___

Now I’ve heard it said that you can’t change your heart, you can only change your mind. And I suppose that is correct….to a point. You see, it is the information that we learn, and which is processed by the mind, that propels us down a particular path. But our course is also directed by the intuitive part….the part that we do almost instinctively and without conscious thought. And that is the part of us all that I believe is “Other” directed by His hand.

___

Now while He may direct the fundamentals…..the essence, if you will…..of how we must move and act, we still have an over-ride button built into each of us that can turn on and off at our own choosing. Free will! Which is why so many find themselves traveling down the wrong road. You see, life is a wonderful and complicated and frustrating journey full of potholes and obstacles and turns, along the way. And yes, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. (Proverbs 16:9 ESV)” But…..BUT, as long as we strive to do good, for ourselves and others, we will surmount the obstacles and temptations that we find. Yes, it is the excellence that we seek that will allow us to achieve our destiny, as long as we learn from the bad that is a part of that journey.

___

It is said that some good can be found in all that is bad, and this is something that I believe, with all my heart. You see, it is by surviving or surmounting those trials, that we discover the inner fortitude and faith that we have been gifted with, and which will allow us to discover the strength we have within. And it allows us to put into perspective, all of the good things we are blessed with.

___

We cannot have rainbows without rain, or healing without hurt. “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV). And we can! It is our choice.

___

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.”

2 Corinthians 5:17-19
