The Shining Light Of Faith

Post 1130

In faith there is enough light for those who want to believe and enough shadows to blind those who don’t.

Blaise Pascal

One of the most loved and well-known songs of faith taught to every little one in Sunday School  is “This Little Light of Mine“! But have you ever wondered how big each light that we have within must be, to assure that we become that beacon of faith that others look to for guidance and teaching and instruction on matters of faith?

I have seen some people whose inner light is barely an imperceptible flicker. You know those people! They are the ones whose light flashes into a brilliance when fed by just the right fuel. The problem is that the fuel is given in fits and starts, and the flame is often starved for great stretches of time so that the only flicker left is often the promise of what once was! However, it can also be the promise of what could be once more!

Then there are the people whose flame burns with a bright white fire often for long stretches of time when suddenly, sometimes without warning, seems to cool….the blue-white heat replaced with a yellow-orange, usually seen when those pesky doubts of self-worth rear their ugly heads. The flames are still there, clearly visible to those that care to look, but are cooled when faced with the worst enemy any of us face….. ourselves! I think that this group of people are the ones that make up 75% of people of faith! I think this is the group I fit into!

Then sometimes, only once or twice in a lifetime, we meet someone who is truly good and kind and whose faith is worn about them like an invisible mantle. Their faith is not sung or preached… just IS! They are sometimes those wise and trusted Rabbis, teachers or other religious scholars whose words are so compelling that we cling to their every syllable. And then they might just be those humble, simple men and women who never seek to shine but who, nevertheless, burn with such a tremendous fire of faith that we are rendered speechless just to know and spend time with and learn from them!

Now the biggest mistake we might make would be if we were to believe that only this third type of person has the power to transform the hearts and minds of those who do not yet know God. I believe that each flame I talked about has the power to teach us some very important piece of the complex puzzle that is faith. And while the depth and degree of that education will most likely be different depending on the depth of the faith each teacher holds within their own heart, each lesson, no matter how trivial we might find it to be, is both vital and necessary in helping us all to form what is our very own and very unique belief system!

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

John 8:12 (KJV)
