Becoming Distracted From Him!

We create an environment where it is alright to hate, to steal, to cheat, and to lie if we dress it up with symbols of respectability, dignity and love.

How many times have you started some project or another only to lose interest before seeing it through to completion? Perhaps that interest in painting that prompted investing in some oils and canvas became put on the back burner as raising a family suddenly required you to sacrifice your valuable time in favor of trips to the Little League field or Orthodontist! How many have promised themselves that today is the day I clean out my closets only to find yourself distracted by another project that seems to appear out of nowhere, just waiting to sabotage your plans. Then again, you might just be hard pressed to live in a house with a broken handle on the toilet!

___

Do you treat your relationship with God the same way? Are your intentions good but suddenly the “shoulda, woulda, coulda’s” happen, as if for the sole purpose of undermining the plans you had for worshiping God or attending Bible study or whatever it was you were to do? And once distracted, do you have a hard time getting back in the swing of things, once more? Well, welcome to the human race!

___

We exist in a time a place in human history of extreme complexities! When I grew up most kids I knew had moms who were housewives. We had TV (maybe) and there were perhaps 3 channels…NBC, CBS, ABC. Most households had only one car so if you needed to get somewhere, you rode your bike or walked. You played till dark in backyards that put you no farther than where you were able to hear your mother’s voice hollering out the back door that it was time to come in for supper. And on the off-chance you were out of earshot, the rule that was ALWAYS obeyed was to be home when the street lights come on!

___

Families today have soccer practice and music lessons. Children have their own screen names and email accounts by the age of 8. There are hundreds of channels on TV’s the size of the wall that play an uninterrupted litany of  shows packed with blood and gore, violence, bad language and sex. Many families find that even with two working parents, they are only one paycheck away from foreclosure or eviction. And still, children are asking for more. We live in a generation where the hand is always out! We live in a time of the “I want” generation. I, I, I and me, me, me! And do we ever take the time to talk to little ones about God….never mind bring them to Sunday School each week? Well, no wonder we a raising a generation of children without knowing what ethics and morals are!

___

It’s not so much what we find ourselves doing that seems to be the problem here. It’s more about what we allow INTO our lives and hearts that finds us becoming distracted from giving God His rightful place on our list of priorities! Are we spending too much time worrying about money or are we spending money too freely? So many things related to money fight us for their attention and when we focus on them, how can we possible give God the attention that He is due? Are we allowing our relationships with others to become a distraction? Even though He asks us to love one another, do we not need to love Him first? Even our work and leisure time factors in when we focus so totally on either one that we forget to allot God His time with us!

___

We are by our very nature a hedonistic society. However, it is when we live this way, we fight a never-ending battle of wills between our corporal side and our spiritual side! And this, and this alone is the primary reason that we must let God see into our hearts and wash us clean of our tendencies toward living lives that sabotage our faith and keep us distracted from Him!

___

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 0But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
