Hearing Or Listening????

Post 1153

Hearing is the act of perceiving sound by the ear. Listening, however, is something you consciously choose to do. Listening leads to learning. Most people tend to be “hard of listening” rather than “hard of hearing”.

Have you noticed how often we listen to exactly the same words being spoken by someone but what we hear is different, and sometimes totally opposite from what a friend hears when listening to the exact same message?

Now this disparity can not be attributed to whether we are male or female; college graduate or high school dropout; business CEO or impoverished and on welfare. You see, I think as citizens of this country, we have basic, fundamental ideas as to what is best for our society and our country. And for the most part, these ideas are probably very much the same. But is how we go about achieving the exact same ends the same? About the same as the philosophies of the Republican and the Democratic parties, the Christian and Muslim faiths, and Communism and Capitalism….in other words, as different as night and day!

Is it ever possible to spread a message that will be understood the same way by all?  I honestly don’t know the answer to that. Generally, we surround ourselves with like-minded people whose beliefs may differ but in that difference, we elicit a healthy debate and hope that, in the end, both sides will at least become aware of the opinions of the other and perhaps become a bit more enlightened. Still, this begs an answer to this question: Is there a difference between simply hearing what is said and listening to what is said? ABSOLUTELY!

When we hear, we merely process the sounds and words. If you are not hearing-impaired, hearing simply happens. Listening, however, is something you consciously choose to do. Listening requires concentration so that your brain processes meaning from the words and how they are put together into sentences and paragraphs and thoughts and ideas and lessons. Listening leads to learning and enlightenment. I hope people are listening to my messages and not merely hearing my words! And boy-oh-boy, am I glad people actually listened to rather than just hearing the words shared by Christ as He traveled sharing His Father’s message. Which also proves another very important point. Listening…. really listening…. and then acting on the lessons learned from that listening and learning…. really can change the world!

And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.
