My Cup Runneth Over

___

This is the true joy in life – being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.

George Bernard Shaw

___

I am lucky! I am part of a family and community of people who have more that millions of others do, worldwide! Unlike the people of Japan or Haiti, we have not lost thousands and thousands and thousands of lives, not to mention miles upon miles upon miles of property completely uninhabitable for decades to come because of the aftermath of massive earthquakes. Unlike the mothers and grandmothers of Middle Eastern countries, I DO NOT worry every time I visit my shopping mall or supermarket, that rockets will rain down on my head, snatching the very life from my being or those I love. Unlike the nations of Africa plagued by drought, I DO NOT fear seeing the tear streaked cheeks and swollen bellies of children who can not remember the last time they ate. And yet there are horrors that exist in my own backyard! I DO worry about senior citizens having to decide between spending their dwindling $$$ on food or medicine. I DO worry about a grandmother punishing a child for eating a candy bar by forcing her to run until she died. I DO worry about children sleeping in their bedroom on the floor as parents conduct drug deals just outside their closed-door.

___

Just in case you don’t understand the idea of exactly what it is, “community activism” can mean whatever it is we want it to mean!   The bottom line though, is to do SOMETHING…….ANYTHING…….to help those whose cup does not runneth over with blessings. No matter what it is that you choose, ANY form of service benefits those in your community. There are some ways I give back in my community that do not take a lot of time or money. Check my ideas out and see if any I list might just inspire you to action too!

___

Go to your local animal shelter and donate a bag of dog or cat food, cat litter, some old towels from your linen closet, or even some bleach and paper towels.

Donate a new or nearly new book to your local Salvation Army, thrift store, library, school or church.

Make a casserole and take it to an elderly neighbor or visit and share a cup of tea and chat for an hour.

Print a flyer and distribute it in your community asking your neighbors to clean out their closets. Then gather the donations and visit a charity resale center, homeless shelter or nursing home.

Go to the dollar store and stock up on crayons, coloring books, ribbon, glue, cotton balls and construction paper and deliver it to an after school program.

Walk or bicycle instead of driving when you can. You’ll feel better and decrease your carbon footprint in the world.

Make a care package for the homeless with a towel, washcloth, tooth-brush, paste, soap, new socks, juice box and package of crackers and carry it in your car to give out if the need arises.

Visit your local fire house and stop in and say THANK YOU.

Plant a tree and help mother nature clean the air we breathe.

Visit a nursing home and bring your old magazines for the residents.

Visit your local senior center and spend some time talking and helping out.

Call your elderly neighbor before heading to the store and ask if you can pick up some things for them.

Buy Girl Scout cookies or contribute to that school raffle or fund-raising campaign.

Volunteer to babysit for that single mom in your neighborhood.

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle……

Mow the yard of a neighbor the next time you mow your own lawn.

Teach a teen how to cook your culinary specialty.

Learn Spanish or sign language and volunteer as a translator through your hospital.

Pick up a backpack and stock it with pens, paper, notebook and bring it to facility that services children in need.

Beautify your neighborhood. Pick up trash. Plant some flowers. Start a community vegetable garden.

___

Always remember there is no “I” in the word VOLUNTEER! Try it just once. You may just find yourself becoming addicted. And activism is an addiction that is good for the body and soul!

___

But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

1 John 3:17-18 NKJV

___

Today the one person who is still with me that not just started my journey on life’s road as a human being but who also taught me the basic fundamentals of language and writing, is celebrating a milestone event. So I ask each of you to join me as I wish the very first man in my life a HAPPY 87th BIRTHDAY!

Happy Birthday Daddy!

I love you very much!

When a man takes an oath… he’s holding his own self in his own hands.  Like water.  And if he opens his fingers then – he needn’t hope to find himself again.

Robert Bolt

http://www.quotegarden.com/promises.html

___

If you have watched the news broadcasts in your community lately, you have likely seen either the headlines or even those less than glaring signs of people reveling in the throes of discord and indiscretions within the beds of committed life partners. Certainly seen within the political arena here in the United States, marital fidelity is taking it on the chin, once more, as comedians take advantage of this new source of material which, almost by a divine hand, has dropped into their laps. And while these people have forced the issue into our living rooms, if you think that this problem rests only with people of note, you are sorely mistaken! Every day, in some way or another, families suffer because of the poor choices one (or both) make, which thumbs noses at the sanctity of an institution almost as old as time itself!

___

When two commit their hearts one to the other, whether sanctified by God or not, the promises made should guarantee that our behavior honors our word, which is the greatest thing that defines the character of each human. But again and again, we fail not just our partner, but ourselves, as well, when we forget things like “love and cherish” and “from this day forward” and “honor”, that is our intent, when we begin that shared life.

___

The most important thing we must understand is that for any close relationship to grow and thrive, one absolute must be embraced. HONESTY! You see, lies and deception erodes trust and raises doubts about not just our spouse but our own worthiness, as well! And there are no shades of gray when it comes to this, Half truths and evasions can be just as harmful. Deception is the generally the one thing that cannot be worked through because it denies that a problem even exists. Because of this, it makes forgiveness unattainable. And even though “Thou shalt not lie” (or deceive) is almost at the tail end of God’s commands for our behavior, that it is there at all should mean something to us all!

___

Couples should aim at total honesty. But honesty must be coupled with the other values such as love, respect and faithfulness. But, “…the greatest of these is LOVE” (1 Corinthians 13: ..13), You see, it is love and truth that allows us to grow and thrive in life! Ephesians 4:15 NIV, tells us, “15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” We are reminded that honesty is what we are compelled to be when we care for another, but love is the glue that holds all things together.

___

Lastly, both honesty and love must be bound with the golden thread that is the holiness of the Almighty! You see, without a commitment to holiness, there is little hope for us that a problem of betrayal within the union of two hearts will not recur! And that state of holiness must begin with each of us BEFORE we seek to unite our hearts, from this day forward!

___

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part; but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

___

fear

___

“There are four ways you can handle fear. You can go over it, under it, or around it. But if you are ever to put fear behind you, you must walk straight through it. Once you put fear behind you. Leave it there.”

Donna Favors

http://theboldlife.com/2011/08/101-quotes-fear/

___

Fear is perhaps the most paralyzing emotion that man experiences. Even anger energizes us, although not always in a good way. But when we experience fear, we often become sick…physically, mentally and emotionally and when this happens, it takes all we can muster to regain control of not just our emotions but, often, our lives. And what is often worse, is when we allow our fear to become so pervasive, that we lose our faith!

___

So often, we forget that sometimes the only way to overcome something that we fear, it simply to attack it and face the devil head on! We should trust that God will see us through any trial that comes our way. We simply need to put aside our human logic, and replace it with God’s truth. “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze” (Isaiah 43:1-2) When you remember this simple verse, and allow it to wash over you, you will suddenly find that fear will lose its grip on your heart, your mind and your faith! Not buying what I’m saying? Well, how about thinking about how it was that Daniel found himself alone and in a den full of lions….and he lived to tell the tale!

___

Remember how Daniel was betrayed which led him to be discovered praying to God, after King Darius had issued a decree that for one month, no one in the kingdom would be permitted to pray and pay homage to any other but him? Remember how Daniel was faced with a horrible punishment….. he was entombed with lions overnight? Since King Darius liked and respected Daniel, and he felt guilty about the punishment he had ordered, at first light he ran to the den and called out Daniel’s name. And of course, Daniel answered. You see, he was alive because his faith in God was unwavering which is why the Lord sent an angel to close up the mouths of the beasts, so that no harm would come to His good and faithful servant.

___

Now I am certain that there are few who have faith strong enough to carry them through an experience like the one Daniel faced. To be honest, I really must wonder if that degree of faith rests within me! But there is one thing that I do hold as absolute. I do know that while I might fear for my mortal life and the earthly people and things I would be leaving behind, my faith is strong enough to reassure me that I do not fear what will become of my immortal soul! That is God’s truth…. promised to us all by the gift of His son.

___

So how about giving God a chance to come though for us! All we need do is reach out to Him, hold His hand, and trust His heart to lead, protect, and preserve us each step we take through a world filled with so many things to be afraid of!

___

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

The Simple Math Of  Evangelism

Thought 1233

___

___

Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.

Albert Einstein

http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/understanding.html

___

For reasons I can not fully understand, the word EVANGELISM has become synonymous with Christians. In fact, look up the definition in “Webster’s, and this is what you will find:

Evangelist

(noun)

1. A preacher of the Christian gospel.2. (when capitalized) any of the spiritual leaders who are assumed to be authors of the Gospels in the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.3. A bringer of the glad tidings of Church and his doctrines. Specially: (a) A missionary preacher sent forth to prepare the way for a resident pastor; an itinerant missionary preacher. (b) A writer of one of the four Gospels (With the definite article); as, the four evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. (c) A traveling preacher whose efforts are chiefly directed to arouse to immediate repentance.

___

However, that may have been true when people of differing faiths generally lived and worshiped in a setting within a defined country or community. But in today’s world, it is likely that you live next door to someone whose core tenets of faith differ from yours. And the result is often less “love thy neighbor” than is ideal to foster mutual respect and understanding of these differences! And it is this which makes the definition of Evangelist penned by Ambrose Bierce in his “Devil’s Dictionary”, newspaper weekly written in the early 20th century, more true, 107 years later, than we might like to believe.

___

Evangelist

(noun)

1. A bearer of good tidings, particularly (in a religious sense) such as assure us of our own salvation and the damnation of our neighbors.

___

Today’s faith leaders are all too eager to impress upon us why the beliefs of their particular religion are the only ones that meet with the approval of the Almighty. They delight in pointing out why they are right and all the rest are wrong, and they will spend the next hour sermonizing so that you know exactly why! How sad this is, when we all are given an opportunity in our blended societies, to share our beliefs in a way that seeks to enlighten and enrich instead of passing judgement and condemning. And whether we see this approach as a revolutionary concept, it is a peaceful revolution that we all can live with, grow in and become better for!

___

Interfaith is such an incredible and powerful force, for gentleness, for respect, for growth and for peace, and if this makes it a revolutionary idea…well, so be it! It meets with my God’s approval! Look at Romans 12:18 NIV, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” You see, from my perspective, and God’s, it’s a peaceful revolution that makes us each a better person! We can live together. We can treat each other with respect. I can affirm who I am … without putting down who you are. Which is what I try to do each and every day that I share my thoughts with you via this wonder of wonders….the internet. And does it work? Well, you can decide, by looking at my stats for a past post! No, I don’t reach millions every day. I don’t even reach thousands. But I do what I can to be part of this peaceful revolution and the simple math of evangelism!

Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and seated on the cloud one like a son of man, with a golden crown on his head, and a sharp sickle in his hand. And another angel came out of the temple, calling with a loud voice to him who sat on the cloud, “Put in your sickle, and reap, for the hour to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is fully ripe.” So he who sat on the cloud swung his sickle across the earth, and the earth was reaped. Then another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. And another angel came out from the altar, the angel who has authority over the fire, and he called with a loud voice to the one who had the sharp sickle, “Put in your sickle and gather the clusters from the vine of the earth, for its grapes are ripe.”

 A Prayer For Today

July 27th, 2014

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Loving Father, without you nothing is holy, nothing has value. For, touched by your hand, our world is holy and has worth. Help us to cherish your gifts that surround us and to share your blessings with our brothers and sisters. May we come to experience the joy of life in your presence. Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Author of Today’s Reading

St Matthew the Apostle

St. Matthew, one of the twelve Apostles, is the author of the first Gospel. This has been the constant tradition of the Church and is confirmed by the Gospel itself. He was the son of Alpheus and was called to be an Apostle  while sitting in the tax collector’s place at Capernaum. Before his conversion he was a publican, i.e., a tax collector by profession. He is to be identified with the “Levi” of Mark and Luke.

His apostolic activity was at first restricted to the communities of Palestine. Nothing definite is known about his later life. There is a tradition that points to Ethiopia as his field of labor; other traditions mention of Parthia and Persia. It is uncertain whether he died a natural death or received the crown of martyrdom.

St. Matthew’s Gospel was written to fill a sorely felt want for his fellow countrymen, both believers and unbelievers. For the former, it served as a token of his regard and as an encouragement in the trial to come, especially the danger of falling back to Judaism; for the latter, it was designed to convince them that the Messiah had come in the person of Jesus, our Lord, in Whom all the promises of the messianic  Kingdom embracing all people had been fulfilled in a spiritual rather than in a carnal way: “My Kingdom is not of this world.” His Gospel, then, answered the question put by the disciples of  St. John the Baptist, “Are You He Who is to come, or shall we look for another?”

Writing for his countrymen of Palestine, St. Matthew composed his Gospel in his native Aramaic, the “Hebrew tongue” mentioned in the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. Soon afterward, about the time of the persecution of Herod Agrippa I in 42 AD, he took his departure for other lands. Another tradition places the composition of his Gospel either between the time of this departure and the Council of Jerusalem, i.e., between 42 AD and 50 AD or even later. Definitely, however, the Gospel, depicting the Holy City with its altar and temple as still existing, and without any reference to the fulfillment of our Lord’s prophecy, shows that it was written before the destruction of the city by the Romans in 70 AD, and this internal evidence confirms the early traditions.

Today’s Gospel Reading

Matthew 13:44-52 ESV

The Parable of the Hidden Treasure

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

The Parable of the Pearl of Great Value

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

The Parable of the Net

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

New and Old Treasures

“Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

Reading 2

Romans 8:28-30 ESV

God’s Indomitable Love in Christ.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he fore knew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified

The Power Of Forgiveness

Thought 1231

___

forgiveness

http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=picture+of+the+power+of+forgiveness&id=13E1FFA7C12DEFB10D4E021788669D4E71691717&FORM=IQFRBA#a

___

It’s really amazing when two strangers become the best of friends, but it’s really sad when the best of friends become two strangers.

“Morgan’s Quotes”

http://morgie31.tripod.com/id6.html

___

Can there be any heartache more acute than the pain that is felt as the result of betrayal by a friend? Since the beginning of times, man has sought to live as part of a community. This was necessary for survival of what is truly a fragile life form… a human being. A community afforded its members protection from predators and more individuals hunting or foraging meant greater success in finding food sources. A community also allowed for a safer environment for the rearing of children and for the exchange of information key to growing and learning and surviving in the world. And while, for the most part, we no longer need a community for this type of supportive nurturing, the emotional support afforded to the members of a community or extended family today remains just as vital and necessary.

___

The organization and banding together of a group of people, all with a common purpose, is a fundamental necessity today and is why we have sought to established ourselves into various communities, consisting of (but certainly not limited to) towns, churches, businesses, companies, etc. Even today, we grow and thrive physically, mentally and spiritually, because of the knowledge and wisdom we have gained from the free exchange of information within our group. However, there can come a time when we forget that the best things in life are the result of our affiliation with others. We begin to think only about ourselves and our own selfish needs and so we may betray the trust and confidences that others have placed with us as friends. Even our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ was not immune to betrayal by those who were closest to him and whom he dearly loved. Following the Last Supper, Jesus retired to the Garden of Gethsemane, to pray to God and to begin preparations for the events that would transpire. Jesus knew what the future would hold. He told the disciples of the betrayals and denials that were to come. And while Jesus was able to forgive all who caused Him such sadness, we who are all too mortal, often have a much more difficult time with the act of forgiveness….. especially when the one needing to be forgiven is ourselves!

___

What is the real motive behind our propensity to hold onto anger? Are we secretly hoping to hurt the person who wronged us right back? Unfortunately, feeling that way usually hurts only one person…. our self! When we hold onto anger we are not happy… we are not contented… we are not at peace with ourselves. What we need to look for is the good that can often arise from the bad…. just as a forest becomes reborn following a wild-fire. Forgiving teaches us more about our inner resources and the “stuff” we are made of than almost any other choice we can make in our daily life. The ability to forgive empowers us and keeps us from being a victim even though to do so often goes against our nature. But forgiveness is what faith teaches us we must do and we must trust that God will give us the inner resources so that we can accomplish this.

Hope is FAITH holding out its hand in the dark.

George Iles

http://www.quotegarden.com/hope.html

___

It seems as if it was only yesterday that I was asking my friends on Facebook to keep a young woman in their prayers. Her name is Bernadette Remias-Harris, and she is a 30 something young woman, married, with beautiful children. But almost exactly 2 years ago, she was entering the fight of her life. You see, she had a fairly nasty form of Breast Cancer and was undergoing a lengthy 5 hour surgery which was the first step in a very long road ahead of her, in doing battle against this, her personal demon.

___

Now the response I received from my request for prayers was phenomenal! From around the globe, people were rallying and asking God’s blessing for Bernie and her family. As a matter of fact, she was lucky enough to see some of those wishes personally, before being taken to the OR. And I was reminded in the vast outpouring of support from people that knew her only as Mandy’s Facebook friend, that no one on this earth is ever alone. Not really! As long as we have what I lovingly think of as the 3 F’s ….. FAITH, FAMILY, and FRIENDS, we are all lifted and supported by a vast network of people, many of whom will always be a stranger to us!

___

Let’s jump back to the thing that my friend has never forgotten matters the most in this life….. those 3 F’s I mentioned. Notice that I started my 3 F’s with the big one, the one word that eclipses all the others…… FAITH? And it occurred to me that I did this naturally and without forethought or intention. FAITH, after all, is the tie that serves to bind the 3 F’s together and is the thing that should always come first in our lives!

___

Now don’t think for a single moment that I don’t love my family with every fiber of my being. I would give up my very life for every one of them without a second thought. And yet, I still hold FAITH first. It was FAITH that made me a person almost nearly 60 years ago. It was FAITH that gave my heart the capacity to love in the first place. It is FAITH that has gifted me with the other 2 F’s in my life. It is FAITH that carries me through all the troubles I face every day. And it will be by FAITH that I draw my last breath, secure in the knowledge of what awaits me when my earthly life is no more.

___

But knowing and feeling the truth of FAITH is only half of the equation. The other piece is being ready, willing and able to seize that FAITH with both hands and hold onto it. Belief and FAITH, while both essentials of living a life that honors God, are not really the same thing. Belief can happen when we must act in the moment. We often do not have time to wait for the certainty of a situation to sink in and so we seize the moment and believe it is possible. Remember when Peter walked on the water? He did not think about it, he just did it! That is what Belief offers to us. However, it is FAITH that gives our Belief its power and strength! FAITH is what makes us certain in the things that Belief teaches to us! I Believe that my friend will do well because it is my FAITH that makes me so certain of this! What does your FAITH give to you?

___

Heb 11:1 (KJV)
Now FAITH is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Heb 11:1 (NIV)
Now FAITH is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Heb 11:1 (NEB)
FAITH… makes us certain of realities we do not see.

Heb 11:1 (Mof)
Now FAITH means that we are confident of what we hope for, convinced of what we do not see.

Heb 11:1 (Wey)
Now FAITH is a well-grounded assurance of that for which we hope, and a conviction of the reality of things which we do not see.

___

Now in case you were wondering, it is 2 years later, and despite the fact that she has not yet reached the “5 year” survival mark, she considers herself a survivor. But then again, she was always a survivor, because she knew that with the help of those  3 F’s, she could and would triumph! In fact, to assist in raising money for the fight that many others, unfortunately, will face both today and tomorrow, she is in the process of becoming incorporated, and making a group that “became” a method of support way back then, into a non-profit. And perhaps one day, in the not too distant future we hope, this group will be the reason a cure has been found in the fight against the #1 cancer to affect women today! What a remarkable legacy to leave to the world, don’t you think? And all because Bernie remembers, as do we all who believe, that we are never alone!

May the angels protect you
Trouble neglect you
And heaven accept you when it’s time to go home
May you always have plenty
Your glass never empty
Know in your belly
You’re never alone
~
May your tears come from laughing
You find friends worth having
With every year passing
They mean more than gold
May you win but stay humble
Smile more than grumble
And know when you stumble
You’re never alone
~
Never alone
Never alone
I’ll be in every beat of your heart
When you face the unknown
Wherever you fly
This isn’t goodbye
My love will follow you stay with you
Baby you’re never alone
~
Well, I have to be honest
As much as I want it
I’m not gonna promise the cold winds won’t blow
So when hard times have found you
And your fear surround you
Wrap my love around you
You’re never alone
~
Never alone
Never alone
I’ll be in every beat of your heart
When you face the unknown
Wherever you fly
This isn’t goodbye
My love will follow you stay with you
Baby you’re never alone
~
May the angels protect you
Trouble neglect you
And heaven accept you when it’s time to go home
And when hard times have found you
And your fear surround you
Wrap my love around you
You’re never alone
~
Never alone
Never alone
I’ll be in every beat of your heart
When you face the unknown
Wherever you fly
This isn’t goodbye
My love will follow you stay with you
Baby you’re never alone
My love will follow you stay with you
Baby you’re never alone
