Natural Events That Defy Understanding!

Post 1206

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.

John Ruskin

Throughout recorded Biblical history, many significant events were either heralded by or guided by forces of nature or weather events which defy explanation. For example, think about the seventh plague of Egypt as described in Exodus 9:18-19 NIV; Therefore, at this time tomorrow I will send the worst hailstorm that has ever fallen on Egypt, from the day it was founded till now. Give an order now to bring your livestock and everything you have in the field to a place of shelter, because the hail will fall on every person and animal that has not been brought in and is still out in the field, and they will die.” And of course, consider the miracle of the Star of Bethlehem that guided the Magi to the Christ Child, a told in Matthew 2:1-2 NIV, After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

Yes, we generally accept all of these events as miraculous even though, when we consider the before, during and after of the time line for what occurred, it is often the sum of the whole that is miraculous. However, given that we are experiencing such global weather turbulence in recent years, including a tornado a short distance from my home not long ago and a hurricane that destroyed so much of what I remember from the Jersey shore, and since there are few redeeming qualities in so many tragedies at the hand of Mother Nature, that are unfolding before our very eyes, I really have to wonder if there is more to the prophecies of the ending times and their relationship to the tragedies we are bearing witness to, these days. Are these things due to some force beyond scientific understanding?

I had a friend share a very interesting article about a year ago that delves into just this very thing in more detail. It is entitled, “Climate Change, Extreme Weather and Bible End Time Prophecy” ( Now I doubt that I have the expertise to really dissect either the premise or the conclusions that have been drawn by the people who wrote this piece, which is why I will leave it to you to read the article and decide for yourself. However, I do feel strongly we who are all too human and all too fallible, spend more time worrying about things that we have no control over, than we really should!

Remember what happened when one couple decided to delve into some things that were God’s business, thinking that they could better control the circumstances of their living than He could? And what was the result? That couple (whose names were Adam and Eve, by the way) thought they would get both pleasure as well as wisdom from eating the forbidden fruit, but in the end, they got neither. Their lives were ruined because of their sin. And lest we think that because the debt for their sin has been paid for us by Christ’s sacrifice, so that now we can afford to be reckless or are free to behave with abandon,…..well think again! We no more know the mind of God, than a gnat knows the mind of man! Which is why we must choose to turn over to Him all of the fear and worry that we may feel, at all of the things Mother Nature chooses to hurl in our direction! After all, we are told in Revelations 3:10 NIV, “Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.” Which is all the reassurance I need, thank you very much!!!!

“And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.”

Matthew 24:39-41 NIV
