Thought For The Day 08/20/14

Faith, Hope & Charity!

But Why Do We List Charity Last????

Thought 1256

1        : benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity

2       a: generosity and helpfulness especially toward the needy or suffering; also: aid given to those in need
b: an institution engaged in relief of the poor
c: public provision for the relief of the needy

3       a: a gift for public benevolent purposes
b: an institution (as a hospital) founded by such a gift

4       : lenient judgment of others

I want to ask you all a question. Can you remember the last time you did something charitable for another person or a group? Now I’m sincerely hoping the answer I’ll be getting is yesterday or even the day before! Surely you’re not going to say Christmas time last year as volunteers were ringing their bell outside of your local big name store.  Or this past spring as your local school children came knocking door to door. Surely not!

The need in our world today is mind-boggling. Babies are dying by the thousands in eastern Africa. Children are being abandoned because parents can’t feed them. Want to try a bit closer to home? Did you know that of the nearly half a million children that are in the foster care system in the United States, over 115,000 have parents who have surrendered parental rights and are available for adoption ( Ok, so you’re not prepared to add to your family numbers. But perhaps you like to sew, or knit or crochet. Have you heard of “Project Linus” ( whose mission is to provide love, security and warmth to ill or traumatized children through the gift of a new blanket. Or how about “meals on wheels” ( who are always looking for volunteer drivers? Ok, so you are busy and can’t make a commitment outside of your home. But every day you go on the computer to check your email and perhaps do some Social Media networking, right? Well then go to one of the “Greater Good” causes like “The Animal Rescue Site” ( and make one click to help provide food to a shelter animal. Surely that would not be too much, would it?

We live in a world that has become selfish and where the meaning of the gift of charity has somehow become lost as we live our type “A” personality lives. But you will be amazed how joyful you will feel after doing just one kind act for another. Surely you can give something, anything, to help others who are crying out every day, feeling abandoned or lost. Paying forward the blessings you have received in your life is the most wonderful gift you will ever be able to give!

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
