A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.

___

Walking the straight and narrow. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? It should be! We spy a goal ahead of us and we focus on that goal and we begin to walk. And yet something amazing begins to happen as we begin that journey, especially when the indecisions and anxieties that humans are saddled with, seems to cloud that which once seemed so crystal clear! Did you know that if a human focuses on a goal or an end point he needs to reach, and then suddenly, surprisingly, he is blindfolded, he will be unable to walk the straight line his mind directs him to? In fact, he will walk around in circles! When we cannot clearly see the end point we hope to reach, sight being the operative word here because it is sight which allows us to make corrections as we walk, our internal compass goes haywire, and we begin to walk in circles! Now the rapidity with which we do this does matter based on some external factors such as whether it is a sunny day or cloudy. However, the bottom line is that when we have no focal point with which to take aim with our eye, we always stray from the path, sooner or later! And the same thing can be said for our faith!

___

When we understand the answer to the question, “How can I know what God wants me to do with my life?”, our eyes are finally given a focal point to aim for as we travel along life’s path! And yet, even as the question seems to infer that there is but one choice for that journey, we all know that is not the case. We may believe we know what the goal is for our lives, but as we walk, we are constantly encountering forks in life’s road which forces yet another choice. And while we often know with certainty which path to take, there are times when we must make our best “guesstimate” which direction to turn. As the great Robert Frost was known to tell his students, “It doesn’t matter what course you take. Simply hang around until you catch the spirit or the spirit catches you!”

___

Now while God’s call to our hearts begs that we live a life with love for Him as our highest motivation, we know that He is pleased when our actions also contribute to the well-being of those who share our life, and often our journey through life at our side. Yet, really, is not the plan that guides the way we move forward every day, already set in motion? Doesn’t God already have the plan for our lives written in stone, in His “Book of Life”? All we need to do is discover how our imput via that free will clause he has given us will help us at those crossroads we come to. Only God, and our own hearts, minds and souls really know the answer as to what that final destination for our lives will be!

___

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
