Thought For The Day 11/12/14

A Rolling Stone Or A Snowball?

Post 1141

Shared joy is a double joy; shared sorrow is half a sorrow.

Swedish Proverb

What is the connection between the two things that are in the title? A rolling stone and a snowball. Well just think for a minute about the adage, “A rolling stone gathers no moss” versus Susan B Anthony’s quote, “…I am like a snowball – the further I am rolled the more I gain.” (1)

A stone is smooth…it’s surface hard and slippery, especially when made wet by the storms that mother nature sends. When it touches another, it comes away from the encounter clean and with no remnants of the event to mar its surface. In fact, looking at it, you would never know there ever was any encounter in the first place! A snowball, on the other hand is quite cold, but feel it’s texture. It is grainy, its crystals perfectly created so that as it rolls, it is able to touch and hold onto all kinds of things. Leaves, twigs, other flakes of snow…..all different but all becoming a part of the magic that is created by this wonder as it rolls, gathering everything and holding it close!

We all have the same opportunities given to each of us. The question is will we brush the encounters aside as if they will never have an impact on our lives. Or will you come near and share with others all the wisdom they have to impart, leaving a better person for having met them and experiencing their unique gifts, if even for a brief moment. King Solomon says it well in Proverbs 16:16 “How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!”

Sharing the lives of all we meet and allowing ourselves to absorb the treasures and wisdom afforded by each will enrich our lives. But even more importantly, the same encounter allows us to touch others, as well! We each are blessed with talents and they must not be hoarded but used and shared abundantly! But opening up does not come without risk. There may be someone who will view a kind heart and generosity as a mark to exploit. And yet we must continue to grow as people and as Christians and that means going where the spirit leads us to go and to try to make our world a better place for us having been a part of it! Remember John Donne’s famous line words, “No man is an island, Entire of itself. Each is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were. As well as if a manor of thine own Or of thine friend’s were. Each man’s death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind. Therefore, send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee.”

Today is my mother’s birthday. She was a huge influence in my life and not a day passes that I don’t ache because she is not here to share my joys, along side of my father. I love you and miss you Mommy, and I always will!

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
