I think that people want peace so much that one of these days government had better get out of their way and let them have it.

Is there anyone reading this post that can’t state with an absolute certainty that living a peaceful existence in a peaceful world isn’t about the highest thing on their list of priorities these days? Now I know there are probably a thousand of other things that rank up there pretty high but when I really sit down and give it some concentrated thought, living a life of peaceful coexistence in the world is the thing that allows many of the rest of the problems that plague us every day to be, if not solved, at least put into a manageable state.

___

Whether we are considering countries at war or families where anger and  discord have managed to become firmly rooted…..in all sorts of relationships, indeed, in any human interaction, people want peace. And yet how many of us really can say we know how to reach those “ends” which, to me at least, are often as elusive as trying to grab a puff of smoke? How do we manage to get people to see beyond those surface scratches that mar the character of most of us, and work toward relationships that are not just mutually satisfying but mutually productive as well?

People of faith understand that, written into the very language of the tenets that define our belief system is one absolute that is indisputable. Our faith requires that we love God and our neighbors and pray for our enemies. We know that all of human kind are the children of God, whether they ascribe to the same set of beliefs as we do, or not. It is how we, as thinking and intelligent individuals with a conscience, see ourselves, no matter what we believe in, or even who we believe in.

___

And so we pray and ask for His divine hand in aiding us in this endeavor. And sometimes peace graces our lives and sometimes it doesn’t. But it is the true and dedicated effort we each make to reach these ends that is, in my opinion, what is being asked of each of us by God, and the thing that will be judged when God calls us to him at the day of our judgement. We each will be judge by the degree with which we lived lives as people of faith living our lives with a heart dedicated to peacemaking.

These last few days, we have been reminded of a true American peacemaker whose life was cut tragically short. And in thinking about the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, I began thinking about other people of note who have been among the world’s greatest peacemakers. Some you may know… others you may not recognize. But each one is credited with striving to make the human condition and the world we live in, a better place. So click on the link and see how many of these blessed peacemakers you know!

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.  Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

James 3: 17-18 NIV
