To Soften Rocks, Or Bend A Knotted Oak

Musick has Charms to sooth a savage Breast, To soften Rocks, or bend a knotted Oak. I’ve read, that things inanimate have mov’d, And, as with living Souls, have been inform’d, By Magick Numbers and persuasive Sound. What then am I? Am I more senseless grown Than Trees, or Flint? O force of constant Woe! ‘Tis not in Harmony to calm my Griefs. Anselmo sleeps, and is at Peace; last Night The silent Tomb receiv’d the good Old King; He and his Sorrows now are safely lodg’d Within its cold, but hospitable Bosom. Why am not I at Peace?

 William Congreve

 “The Mourning Bride”, 1697

I don’t know about you, but I just love to sing. Now when I was younger, I could carry a passably pleasing tune. Today, not so much, which is just fine because most of my singing is limited to times when I am around my family whose capacity to carry a tune rivals my own! And besides, probably 50% of my musical repertoire comes from the children’s television programming and movies geared to the under 5 age group, and since Landon is generally singing (or giving singing a good try) right along with me, in his eyes, I am a Memaw Diva! Music hath such charms, and to reinforce this point, EVERY single time some of his favorite shows come on, even if he is in another room, Landon comes bounding into the living room and starts rocking and grooving to the beat of these amazingly stimulating theme songs. And when I see the joy and happiness in his eyes, I am returned to the time when I could comfortably hold him for hours at a time in my arms and stop his tiny tears and lull him to sleep by softly singing songs to him…..which I did…..often and unashamedly!

___

Think about something for a moment. Have you ever been able to feel anger or hatred or remorse or any of the dozen negative emotions that sometimes can hang around our necks like millstones, when you raise your voice up in song? Not even a negative word can be uttered when we are joyfully and whole heartedly raising our voices up as we listen to our favorite recording.

___

Did you know that music’s charms are indeed healing? A pilot study is currently being undertaken based on an unusual phenomenon relating to Parkinson’s Disease. The study began when reports emerged that a man with severe Parkinson’s disease suddenly stopped having tremors when listening to the  Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra’s concerts! Music Therapy is being used more and more in treating Psychiatric disorders and music is incorporated into Holistic Therapies, as well!

___

The learned authors who penned the Books of the Bible certainly recognized the importance that music plays both in the lives of man as well as in the worship and praising of our Lord and Savior. Did you know that there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 1150 verses in the Bible that reference music in some way? Not all talk about singing per se.

___

Some refer to the instruments used to make music such as the lyre, harp, trumpet and horn while others do, in fact, refer to hymns, songs, music, melodies and psalms that is the essence of music itself. And of course, as I am wont to do, I wonder that if those seeking to share to good news about God made so many references to just this fact, why is it that we, as a collective group, don’t spend much more of our time singing our hearts out? Perhaps if we did, don’t you think we would find a little less time to hate one another and a little more time to love our neighbor?

___

Worried about whether you can carry a tune? Don’t be! God doesn’t care if the music we share is up to the standards of Placido Domingo. Just like Truvy Jones (Dolly Parton) said in “Steel Magnolias”, “God don’t care which church you go to as long as you show up”, I have to think he thinks the same way about our singing His praises! Which is why I am sharing some of the wonderful bible verses that talk about music and singing!

What Are The Values You Seek To Share?

Post 1192

___

It’s not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are.

Roy Disney

http://www.quotegarden.com/decisions.html

___

Today I began thinking about all of the people who have made such a tremendous impact on my life throughout the years. From my parents who instilled in the very first values that formed the foundation of instructions for living my life, to each person I met throughout the years as I lived that life, each one added layer upon layer of life lessons that became my character. We, none of us, grows to adulthood unassisted. Unlike many of God’s other living creations who can successfully navigate the days to maturity with little in the way of direct influence from other members of his species, man is, from his infancy, totally dependent upon the others who are intimately connected to him. We do not speak instinctively. We learn as speech is demonstrated by the adults who share our lives during our formative years. We do not know the values we hold within our hearts until they are first given to us by others either through lessons taught by word of mouth or demonstrated by example by those that love us enough to want to set our feet on the right path!

___

Have you ever thought about all of the things that make us special? What are some of the values we need to become full and complete and caring people in our world? Are there any that seem more important or are they all equally responsible for making us the best people we can be? And as I was thinking about the core values that are the most important to me, there are some that come readily to mind although I am sure that there must be hundreds (perhaps thousands) more, less definable character builders that are part of what becomes our very essence! Below is a list of some of the things I tried to pass along to my children and my grandson. You may disagree with me but I’m betting when you really think about them, each has merit for molding us into not just the best person we can be but also the best person of faith we can be! Read them and think about each one as it relates to the way you live your life, and then decide the worth of each thing I have listed. I am pretty sure there are none you would eliminate from that list of important character builders!

___

Appreciation     Belief     Caring     Character     Charity     Class And Grace     Commitment     Compassion     Confidence    Courage    Courtesy    Dedication    Determination    Devotion    Drive    Excellence    Faith    Foresight    Forgiveness    Friendship    Generosity    Gratitude   Hard Work    Honesty    Honor    Hope    Humility    Integrity    Justice    Kindness

  Love

Loyalty    Optimism    Passion    Patience    Perseverance    Purpose    Respect    Responsibility    Sacrifice    Sharing    Stewardship    Strength    Trust    Unity    Vision

___

I put Love on its own separate line because I believe this is the one thing that serves to bind all of the rest of these character builders to our souls. Do you not agree that it is Love that leads those that care enough about the people we will become to instill all of the tools we will need to live our lives as good people? If all of those who added those layers to our character did not Love us to begin with, would they even care enough to want us to grow to our full potential? I think not. Love is the tie that binds us to others and it is the tie that binds us to God as people of faith, as well. Yes, this little word sums up all of the good we strive to share with others and without it, somehow the importance of the rest would lose a bit of what makes them so necessary to our lives, don’t you think?

___

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. …

Women Are From Venus & Men Are From Mars

There is more difference within the sexes than between them.

Ivy Compton- Burnett

The following was received via email

The Author is Unknown

___

A woman arrived at the Gates of Heaven. While she was waiting for Saint Peter to greet her, she peeked through the gates. She saw a beautiful banquet table. Sitting all around were her parents and all the other people she had loved and who had died before her.

They saw her and began calling greetings to her. “Hello – How are you! We’ve been waiting for you! Good to see you.”

When Saint Peter came by, the woman said to him, “This is such a wonderful place! How do I get in?”

“You have to spell a word,” Saint Peter told her. “Which word?” the woman asked.

“Love.”

The woman correctly spelled ‘Love’, and Saint Peter welcomed her into Heaven.

About a year later, Saint Peter came to the woman and asked her to watch the Gates of Heaven for him that day.

While the woman was guarding the Gates of Heaven, her husband arrived.

I’m surprised to see you,” the woman said. “How have you been?”

“Oh, I’ve been doing pretty well since you died,” her husband told her.

“I married the beautiful young nurse who took care of you while you were ill. And then I won the multi-state lottery. I sold the little house you and I lived in and bought a huge mansion. And my wife and I traveled all around the world. We were on vacation in Cancun and I went water skiing today. I fell and hit my head, and here I am. What a bummer! How do I get in?”

“You have to spell a word,” the woman told him.

“Which word?” her husband asked.

” Czechoslovakia ..”

___

Moral of the story:

Never make a woman angry… There will be Hell to pay Later!

 ___

I am a women and in case you never noticed, the adage “Women are from Venus and Men are from Mars” is one of the most accurate descriptions to explain the differences in not just the emotional psyche but mental and perceptual capacities that exist between the sexes. We are as different as night and day. I use Dan and me as case in point. Dan is a big picture guy. Most men are. He notices only huge differences in things and then, only when they come over and jump on his head. Me, on the other hand, I notice the smallest change or alteration in something. And even when that change is but the faintest whiff of a promise of what is to come, I still seem to somehow, intuitively sense that something different is on the horizon. So now I must wonder whether “Mars” and “Venus” can both view matters of faith the same way?

___

Women by their very essence as the more empathetic and sensitive of the sexes might seem to have a greater capacity for faith than their male counterpart. However, if you embrace the literal approach to the things the Bible states, women were always relegated to a more subservient place, not just within the family, but within the way faith was practiced. Women, except for a select few matriarchs, were rarely mentioned by name in the Bible. And the covenant formed between God and the Israelites, which bound both men and women in its intent, required that men act to assure that the members of his household (wives, children, and slaves) uphold it principles. In other words, women were bound to obey, but only indirectly.

___

If there is one absolute that history has taught us, it is that things are constantly evolving. And if there can be anything discerned about life views today, it must be the eradication of sexual distinctions that have occurred during the gender revolution of the last 75 years. And I embrace the view that, while God created men and women differently, in reality, He created us as equals with a few gender defined differences such as childbearing. I believe men and women are equal in intelligence, dignity and worth, and as such, are both full members of the body of Christ, and with all that entails. And as such, we all must, each sex, grow in our faith, and use our gifts of spirituality to the best of our abilities, for the betterment of humankind!

___

Then God said, “Let us   make mankind   in our image,   in our likeness, so that they may rule   over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky,   over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

So God created  mankind  in his own image, in the image of God  he created them; male and female  he created them.

God blessed them and said to them,“Be fruitful and increase in number;  fill the earth  and subdue it. Rule over  the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground. ”

The Ark

Post 1184

___

http://www.answersingenesis.org/assets/images/articles/am/v2/n2/ark-layout.jpg

___

Always remember to hope for the best but to prepare for the worst. After all, never forget that it wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark!

Amanda Pierce Bruscella

___

Having developed a close friendship over the last year with people who foster and care for animals as well as some animal sanctuary programs, and discovering all of the logistical difficulties of making provisions for and then caring for some small species of animals, I am positively awe-struck at what a monumental task would have been brought to bear by Noah and his family on the ark. And even when assuming that the animals for the purposes of practicality simply relating to size alone, must have been quite young, the amount of food and water needed  and the resultant wastes produced for the approximately 16,000 animals (the accounting of which is done in the most rudimentary of fashions) positively boggles the mind. Certainly, when remembering the ventilation and fresh air needs (although people in those days probably were not as aware of the odors involved since it is only in more recent times that man and beasts have been housed in separate quarters) to offset the inevitable accumulation of things like toxic methane gasses which might just prove harmful not only to the animals but their human caretakers, as well, I must ask how in the world all of this was managed by one family for 40 or so days?

___

The design of the vessel alone was pure, God inspired certainly, genius! And while the rendering above is not a proven design for the ark, it seems likely that Noah and the small number (7) of family members that were entrusted with this mission by God, certainly planned for the logistics of not working harder but working smarter. Animal species that could live together in harmony and safety, probably were housed en masse.

___

Even for animals needing more specialized foods to meet dietary needs which would have been guaranteed them in their natural habitat, probably were fed similar types of foods as the rest, and which most likely consisted of plant products and grains which could have been more easily stored. Meat eaters may have been fed with dried fish and meat which would not have been difficult to store for the journey. The goal here, after all was not really to thrive but was, instead, simple survival! Water most likely was shared by use of conduits feeding it into troughs.

___

Certainly the availability of water was never an issue. And with the feeding of so many, comes the inevitable by-product …. waste. Slatted and sloped flooring would have allowed wastes to fall through where it would have more easily been cleaned. The motion of the Ark as it rode the flooded seas, would have helped to dissipate accumulated gasses and kept the vessel habitable for the duration of the journey.

___

Now there are many out there who doubt that this event really occurred. There are some who view it being related in the Bible simply as a metaphor for explaining the consequences for sin. We know that the world as it was known then was not the world as we know it to be today, either in size or in scope. However, nearly every faith including Christianity, Islam and Judaism speak of the story. And while there has not yet been offered definitive proof for the flooding, it is certainly plausible to think about the melting of polar ice causing a rapid rise of many, many feet in the Black sea, likely causing massive regional flooding. Then again, putting aside trying to find logical explanations for the story, perhaps this is simply another way of asking us to believe something in the absence of absolutes. We who believe, are asked to do this often. We always have been and we always will! Isn’t this, after all, part of what we are taught about everything related to God? All that comprises the very essence of belief is accepting that for which we have no evidentiary proof and is that not the definition of FAITH?

___

“And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.”

Genesis 7:23 KJV

The Hardest Job In The World

39 years ago today I started work at the hardest job I ever had. There have been days (many, many) where I didn’t want to even get out of bed and face the day because of it. It’s a job of 90 : 10 percent give : get back …. and don’t ever let anyone tell you it’s 50 :50 percent because they are just plain WRONG! It’s a job that breaks your back, gives you migraines and, at times, makes you rue t he day you were born. You struggle, yell and even hate sometimes (OK, maybe hate is a bit strong….let’s amend that to dislike intensely). All in all, it’s a job no one in their right mind would want, right? NO!!!!!!!! It’s a job millions and millions have entered into despite the statistical probability that about 50% of those who have tried this job will fail. What is this horrible sounding job, you wonder?????? MARRIAGE!!!!!!

The Most Wonderful Job In The World

39 years ago today I started work at the most wonderful job I ever had. There have been days (many, many) where I faced the morning sun with such joy in my heart because of it. It’s a job that makes you want to give 100% of yourself because the reward you get back is priceless! It’s a job that lifts your spirit, brings a song to your heart and makes you grateful every day that you were born so that you would be brought to this place. You laugh, praise it to all who will listen and love it each and every day. All in all, it’s a job that is so fulfilling that it’s hard to imagine anyone in their right mind who wouldn’t want to do it, right? YES!!!!!!!! It’s a job millions and millions have entered into because the statistical probability is that 50% of those who have tried this job will succeed. What is this wonderful sounding job, you wonder?????? MARRIAGE!!!!!!

We Learn What We Live

___

The young always have the same problem – how to rebel and conform at the same time.  They have now solved this by defying their parents and copying one another.

Quentin Crisp

http://quotegarden.com/teenagers.html

___

Never before in my lifetime has the speech of so many young people been peppered so liberally with the prolific use of 4 Letter words. From music to writings, to the conversations overheard in the local shopping mall food court, profanity has become as common place as are cell phones and the home PC! Now I do not know whether the goal of so many of the world’s youth is to shock or to simply rebel against the authority adulthood represents, but if that is the case, it is working! The language of today’s youth is capable of making a sailor blush! However, whatever the goal is, it does seem to be the mission of the youth of the world to shock and dare at every opportunity. It existed in my early teen years, AKA the “free love” generation. It was to be found in the 50’s era of swiveling, Elvis like, hips and teens emulating James Dean in “Rebel Without a Cause”. Heavens, it was the goal of young people when men wore “Zoot Suits” and flappers bared knees. And no doubt, if we had the capacity of time travel, we probably would have found the same pinched faces and gritted teeth of adults bemoaning just what has happened to young people even 2000 years ago!

___

Transitioning through the teen years and becoming an adult is no easy task. Faced with a world at war, and the starved faces of children staring back through pictures brought into every home by news media, can not help but create a negative effect on the world’s young men and women who are trying to figure out exactly what their role will be in life. They see members of the American Congress who will not budge an inch either way toward the bi-partisanship that is needed to unify not just our country, but the world, as well! They see religious factions acting in ways that are anything but religious as women and children seeking an education are mutilated and disfigured throughout the Middle East. How can we expect that our youth will grow into adulthood as individuals willing to change the world for good when the only example they see growing up is one of hatred, anger and apathy?

___

For my money, the answer is simple. The buck stops here! It stops with all of the adults in the world! Children do not just happen. They do not emerge from the womb with a fully established sense of morals and values. Children are created by the example they see every second that they live. They require nurturing and love and all the advantages we can possible find within to give them. It became our responsibility and debt to them the moment they were conceived!

___

Some of you might recall that I posted a picture not long ago on my “Heroes For Children” social media page for the Guardian ad Litem program here in SC, which pretty much sums it all up. I like to call it “If A Child Lives With…..”. I am sharing it with you today here in this blog. Read it carefully, memorize every sentence and store each word away in your heart where they will always be near at hand for you not just to remember, but to share with a child, every opportunity that you get. After all, do we not owe it to the children of the world to help them become responsible, caring and moral adults? Are they not our only hope for a world where our tomorrows are better that our yesterdays were?

Just What Is The Attraction?

Post 1167

___

___
Oh, the comfort – the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person – having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are, chaff and grain together; certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then with the breath of kindness blow the rest away.

Dinah Craik
“A Life for a Life” (1859)
___
How often have you seen two people together and the very first thought that jumps int your head is, “What in the world do they see in each other?” And unless we are one of the two people involved, that is an essential truth that can be asked about nearly any couple we encounter. Yes, on occasion we see that couple who, by the very closeness of not just their relationship but their love, seem to somehow morph into twins. Think about any really happily married couple you know that has been together for many decades and you find not just similar features staring back at you as they stand side-by-side, but also like mannerisms and tastes, as well.  And yet, ask most people dating out there if they want to find someone who resembles or even complements their personality, and the large majority would answer, “Not on your everlasting life!”
___
People who are very different are exciting. They nudge us into living a bit more vicariously, for the moment. Perhaps they show us, for one fleeting moment, the person we wish we could be, because when you get right down to it, there are few of us who are completely happy with the person we are. Who out there doesn’t have that secret desire to live a life totally opposite from what we show the world every day? And yet, what we really find is that the most successful relationships are not those that make us want to redefine who we are. They are relationships who want to help us to become a better “us”!
___
People with similar tastes and passions as those we hold generally validate our beliefs and views. People with similar tastes and passions generally find themselves with fewer conflicts in their relationship. And yet, studies also prove that couples whose personalities were more alike actually formed happier long-term relationships than those whose attitudes regarding things like values and even issues of faith were aligned. And most certainly, those who try to form a relationship built upon the  fires of passion and intense physical attraction have the least amount of long-term success.

Relationships are a gift. Man is by his very nature an incredible social animal who needs the kinds of emotional security and bonding that are to be found in solid relationships with others. We know this to be true from the Bible’s earliest writings about the Garden of Eden! Man can not be happy alone and although not all people choose to establish life partnerships one with the other,  all require the intimacy that those special one-on-one relationships with another human being affords us, even when that is fostered by a close friendship. The happier we each can be, the better people we become and that translates into each of us becoming a better spouse or partner, family member, friend, acquaintance, neighbor, and even Christian! And, of course, adding to the mix each sharing a common relationship with the Almighty forms that three-fold cord……a bond as unbreakable as iron!

Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?    Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
