What is true by lamplight is not always true by sunlight.

Joseph Joubert

"What is true by lamplight is not always true by sunlight."

___

I was thinking about the boogeyman (AKA the Will-O’-The-Wisp) the other day. I know that’s an odd thing to come to the mind of an adult, but when my son was very little, he became obsessed with the idea of monsters in his closet. And it didn’t matter how much I reassured him that there were no monsters. He was so fearful that bedtime became a nightmare. Until I changed the players in the game.

___

I spent one night reading to my children, as I tried to do as often as possible, but instead of a fairy tale that might have some characters that were frightening to young children, I selected only stories that were upbeat, happy and presented positive images of people and life. And if I was able to paint a picture in their minds that reinforced a message that they, too, could do absolutely anything they wanted, as long as it was good, would not hurt others and could have a positive impact in not only their lives but in the lives of those around them, then I knew they would learn a lesson that would last a lifetime….. and maybe, just maybe, get rid of the boogeyman.

___

Well, it took a few more days of difficult bedtimes, me reading and sharing happy thoughts and reassuring that the rustling they thought they heard was only the wings of angels sent by God to watch over them, but before any of us realized it, bedtime became a much happier time of day for our family, and the boogeyman was no more.

___

It all in how we choose to rationalize the things in our lives that we find troubling, and even frightening. If we turn our minds to the joyful message that our faith and our belief in promises given to us by the Almighty, we can transform those fears into positive action with the net result being that we live a happy and fulfilling life. If, on the other hand, we keep our minds mired in fear and a sense of hopelessness, we will find that the boogeyman or Will-O’-The-Wisp never leaves our closet! That is why God has chosen to frequently  spread words of encouragement against fear throughout the Bible. From Genesis to Revelation, God reminds us to “Fear not.”

___

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

The Grim Reaper

___

When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, “I used everything you gave me.”

___

It is impossible to even consider life and especially, life everlasting without thinking about its opposite…..Death. Or perhaps more appropriately, the entity that we have come to think of as “The Angel of Death”, or even “The Angel of Dark and Light”! Yes, people have chosen to view Death in physical terms and while this personification of death as “The Grim Reaper” has existed for only the last 600 years, in reality, it was given form, in a way, as far back as the pages of ancient Hebrew, Catholic and Islamic texts. There are those who view this character as the one who carries out God’s wrath over the wicked. But even when we think about perhaps the strongest evidence of Death from a Biblical perspective, which presents this dark presence in Exodus 12, in describing the deaths of the first born of the house of Egypt happening in a way that none can ever forget!

___

“And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the basin; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he sees the blood on the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you. And you shall observe this thing for an ordinance to you and to your sons for ever…”

Exodus 12:22-24 KJV

___

Notice how the Bible actually references this entity as simply “Destroyer”. And it is this that remains the commonly used term throughout the tome, whether looking at the texts from their Aramaic or Greek origins! But no matter how you choose to think about or describe Death, the fact of the matter is, that to a human mind which is in perpetual need of proof in order to believe, anything that presents to us as a part of the great unknown, is also something to be feared or dreaded, no matter the degree we have tried to reconcile ourselves to the things we hold as absolute, such as what will happen to us when our living is no more! Simply stated, we fear the unknown and death is the unknown, therefore, we fear death, even though it is also one thing we know to be an absolute by-product of our living!

___

The thing is, that we fear death presumes that we have a reason for doing so. And the only reason I can think of is that we have sins for which we have not made our atonement. So if we die in our sins, then yes, death would, indeed, be a grim reaper coming for us. But for those who embrace the Christian philosophy, you must know that those sins have been blotted out by the death of the Son, whose sacrifice was our payment in full, for a lifetime of living….presuming you accept and believe that this is so! And while it’s coming may not be without some mortal pain, depending on what it is that will claim our final breath among the living, death can not hurt us, any more than undressing at night and putting on pajamas and falling asleep between our crisp, clean sheets, hurts us. And even better, we will not be going alone, because we have been promised that He will guide us there to make sure our arrival is assured. John 14:3 NIV, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

___

Death is both the inevitable and natural process of life and the answer as to how it will come knocking will be ours to know in His time, rather than ours, assuming we do not live those lives in a way that invites its inevitability sooner than later. But like it or not, it is something we will deal with when it comes, and not a single moment sooner. So instead of fearing that which we can not control, why not focus our beings on that which we can control. Let us live life fully in the present and live it with not just a zest, but a compassion, as well. Let us show Him that we will be prepared to come to Him in His time with no regrets for the part of life’s journey that we make, that is within our capacity to control! LIVE every moment. LAUGH every day. LOVE beyond words. These three things are within our power to give to ourselves, so take them, and run, and LIVE, for all you are worth, because Death may show its face to you, unexpectedly!

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.”

How Do We Deal With Our Fear?

___

Obstacles are like wild animals. They are cowards but they will bluff you if they can. If they see you are afraid of them… they are liable to spring upon you; but if you look them squarely in the eye, they will slink out of sight.

___

The other day, Dan and I were traveling home from Wilmington, NC, which is about a 75 mile trip (one way) because that is where his specialist is for one of his cancers (yes I said one, because we have a full plate right now where cancer is concerned). Now we are united and confident that, just as we always have been since first facing this enemy in 1998, we will triumph, together, over this insidious, malignant foe. And I guess because this is within the realm of the known for me, I do not fear what we face. However, what I DO find myself fearing was a sight that made my heart lurch as we were on our way home from his treatment. That, my friends, was the sight of a dozen military transport planes, in 4 groups of 3 each, that spanned the horizon in front of our eyes…heading from southwest to northeast. They were not fighter jets but appeared to be the type of jet aircraft that we use to ferry troops and supplies where we need them to be. And that, my friends, I do fear…..

___

We live in an uncertain age and, unfortunately for mankind, it is an age where too many leaders think like a child often thinks….that it is the one who comes away from the schoolhouse scuffle as the one on top, who will be the one that gets to wear the crown of victory. It is behavior that is often seen when politics consume common sense, and when we allow political gain to erode our capacity to foster a genuine dialogue and exchange of ideas, between people, and nations. It is the same mentality that consumed the thinking of Caiaphas the high priest, and the scribes and the elders, during the Sanhedrin trial of Christ, before he was surrendered to Pontious Pilate for sentencing. For that matter, it was the same thinking that consumed and destroyed King Saul who could only see his legacy being threatened by David instead of seeing the great things the two, united, might have been able to accomplish for their people. Romans 14:1 ESV says it all don’t you think? “As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.” But it is this mindset and inability to allow free opinions among other people, that frightens me, because this is what is consuming the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un.

___

Dealing with fears like this are some of the toughest problems we face, especially in a nuclear world, but how successful we are depends on the approach we take. The solution is easy to reason but immensely hard to accomplish, because it demands that we cede our power to control all things, to whatever higher power we gain comfort from worshipping! Whether it is Buddhism, which is the primary religion in North Korea, or Islam in the Middle East, Judaism throughout the region (spread widely by the nomadic existence forced upon these people throughout history), Christianity which dominates most Western cultures, to the hundreds of other recognized faiths, the essential values all hold in toto, peace and brotherhood among all people, is nearly universal. And it will only be when we accept that the powers of both good and evil to manage, rests solely with whatever Higher Power we worship and love, will we be able to realize universal peace! 1 John 4:18 KJV, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”

___

Now for my faith, I know that we will succeed only if we choose to trust. Yes, unwavering and yes, even blind, TRUST. You see, it is only when we recognize that fear is what Satan wants from us, to tempt us away from the truth that is ours to know only when we believe in God (For me, my Supreme Being), will the world be ready to move forward in the true spirit of brotherhood! Psalm 33:4-6 KJV “For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.”

___

I want you all to remember some very wise words, written just this past Sunday, by a friend (and mentor) of mine, in a sermon entitled, “Be Not Troubled”:

So today as you go about your day, and you hear these things on the news or read about them online, I ask you to not worry, and to say a prayer for those who are in harm’s way. Our Lord will keep us in His arms. We may face trials, we may face wars, we may be persecuted, and yes a time may come when we as Christians may be called upon to give our life for our Faith….. But the hope that we have is in the promise of Our Lord in (Matthew 24), verse 13, “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”
