A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.

George Moore

___

We seem to be facing so many attacks in our lives these days. Some are by the hand of man against his brother both here and abroad, while others are by the hand of God as witnessed by adverse weather phenomena such as drout, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. And I do not know whether they are, indeed, a harbinger or portent of things to come! Ask any number of religious scholars or even scientists their opinion and you will find an equal number who delight in trying to tell us, in all detail, the hows and the when! In fact, there are some who hold fast to the assertion that the ending of days is shown to us all, by things that are being attributed to the Holy Roman Empire (aka the European Common Market), which fulfills the prophesy that has been given to man in Revelations.

___

Now I am not so sophisticated as to be able to say with any certainty that what they believe is or is not just possible but true. I am not blessed with an in-depth understanding of Biblical history nor of the specifics that seem to act as indicators to some people. What I am is a simple person who knows and loves God and as such, I merely offer a caveat. It is, in my opinion, not the way of the Almighty to allow us foreknowledge of what he has planned for human kind. Mark 13:32 ESV says, But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. My feeling is that until the time comes for us to actually bear witness to the ending of times, we are better served by making ourselves ready to meet Him, and living and enjoying all the things that we have been given that not just bring us closer to Him, but make us happy, as well! And with this in mind, I’m planning another “Ha-Ha” post. Yes, I want us to think but I want us to do it with joy in our hearts!

___

A little boy was overheard praying: “Lord, if you can’t make me a better boy, don’t worry about it. I’m having a real good time like I am.”

A Sunday School teacher asked the children just before she dismissed them to go to church, “And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?” Annie replied, “Because people are sleeping”

Attending a wedding for the first time, my Granddaughter whispered to my Wife.” ” Why is the bride dressed in white?” My Wife replied: “Because white is the color of happiness, today is the happiest day of her life.” My Granddaughter thought about it for a moment then said, “So, why is the groom wearing black ? “

An elderly woman died last month. Having never married or even dated, she requested no male pallbearers. In her handwritten instructions for her memorial service, she wrote : “They wouldn’t take me out while I was alive, I don’t want them taking me out when I’m dead.

The preacher was wired for sound with a lapel mic, and as he preached, he moved briskly about the platform, jerking the mic cord as he went. Then he moved to one side, getting wound up in the cord and nearly tripping before jerking it again. After several circles and jerks, a little girl in the third pew leaned toward her mother and whispered,”If he gets loose, will he hurt us?”

“This afternoon there will be a meeting in the south and north ends of the church. Children will be baptized at both ends.”

“Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale.  It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house.  Don’t forget your husbands.”

A true story: the chairman of the Finance Committee declared the meeting could not be convened for lack of quorum. He asked one of the ministers present to lead in a prayer. Tired of the lengthy meeting, the minister intended to help the cause when he prayed: “Lord, we thank you for your Word that says, ‘where two or three are gathered in your name, they have a quorum. . .” The meeting was promptly convened with a full quorum!

And to cap off your ha-ha sharing, here is A Touch of Fun, barbershop quartet, performing “Let A Smile Be Your Umbrella” for the enjoyment of the audience at The Bucktown Revue, September 2011.  The Bucktown Revue is held the third Friday of the month from September through May at the Nighswander Theater, 2822 Eastern Ave in Davenport IA at 7 PM. This upload was released on Mar 10, 2012 by Quad City Talent’s channel.

Mirth is God’s medicine.  Everybody ought to bathe in it.

Did you know that if you enter the phrase “Jokes you can tell in church” into the search engine of your computer, you will be instantly connected with hundreds of pages (and I only say hundreds…. it may be thousands…. because that is as far as I got before my fingers became tired from pressing the forward arrow key). Which goes far to support something I have held in my heart my entire life…. laughter is to the soul as Aloe is to a sunburn. Laughter cools the sting of a hurt, eases the pain of heartache, lifts us when we can not travel another step, and simply makes us feel so darned good inside. It decrease in stress hormone levels, relaxes muscles, reduces pain, lowers blood pressure and strengthens the immune system. And while I know that the times Christ carried His message with his Disciples were not always easy days for any of them, I am sure that, at the end of the day, the time they used as fellowship together under God’s canopy of stars in the company and communion of one another, must have included times of laughter interspersed with the times of lessons and meditation!  At least I like to think they spent time in laughter! There certainly are more than just a few Bible verses that talk of the benefits laughter gifts us with. One website alone lists 45 verses about humor and laughter (http://www.openbible.info/topics/humor_and_laughter).

___

The problem with so much that passes for humor these days is that the things that are told as jokes are things many of us are not always comfortable with hearing, never mind sharing with another. I am a tad bawdy and I do appreciate most jokes…. up to a point. I do not like humor that hurts or demeans or singles the little guy out, such as ethnic jokes sometimes do. That, I have difficulty finding the humor in. But I do find that I truly appreciate having a place (or website) I can turn when I want to laugh that is not going to have me curling my toes. That is especially true today as it is going to be a somewhat difficult day for me, since I am nursing a twisted ankle which happened when a shotgun blast which, while not close, was picked up by the acute hearing of my dog who decided to make a bee-line back to the house…. with me flying behind. So for today, I am resting, but resting with a smile plastered to my face and I hope you will laugh right along with me. (And I wouldn’t mind a prayer or two, if you’ve a mind to share them!)

THE PERFECT PASTOR

(From what I’ve seen in many churches, these church jokes is only a slight exaggeration!)

The Perfect Pastor preaches exactly 10 minutes.  He condemns sin roundly, but never hurts anyone’s feelings.  He works from 8 a.m. until midnight, and is also the church janitor.

The Perfect Pastor makes $40 a week, wears good clothes, drives a good car, buys good books, and donates $30 a week to the church.  He is 29 years old and has 40 years’ worth of experience.  Above all, he is handsome.

The Perfect Pastor has a burning desire to work with teenagers, and he spends most of his time with the senior citizens.  He smiles all the time with a straight face because he has a sense of humor that keeps him seriously dedicated to his church. He makes 15 home visits a day and is always in his office to be handy when needed.

The Perfect Pastor always has time for church meetings and all of its committees, never missing the meeting of any church organization.  And he is always busy evangelizing the unchurched.

The Perfect Pastor is always in the next town over!

If your pastor does not measure up, simply send this notice to six other churches that are tired of their pastor too. Then bundle up your pastor and send him to the church at the top of your list.

If everyone cooperates, in one week you will receive 1, 643 pastors.  One of them should be perfect.

Have faith in this letter.  One church broke the chain and got its’ old pastor back in less than three months.

WHO DOES WHAT

A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each morning.

The wife said, “You should do it, because you get up first, and then we don’t have to wait as long to get our coffee.”

The husband said, ” You are in charge of cooking around here and you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee.”

Wife replies, “No, you should do it, and besides, it is in the Bible that the man should do the coffee.”

Husband replies, “I can’t believe that, show me.”

So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and showed him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says……….

I was thinking about all of the blogs I have written since that very first post of mine published on March 25th, 2011, and I began to wonder whether any of them contained some of those profound one-liners like you see on those catchy church signs or bumper stickers. You know what I mean. I’m talking about things like the title of that 1945 movie starring Dennis Morgan and Raymond Massey, “God Is My Co-Pilot”. And so I decided to scan through the pages that have somehow become transformed from thought to idea to blog to see whether I could find a few gems to re-share with you. I was aiming for those one sentence pearls of wisdom and pretty much succeeded with a few exceptions, which I also included. Now there were many that I glossed over but these were a few that caught my eye as I was perusing all of those blogs! Included is a new one I created especially for today based on a snippet from a post of mine from just a couple of days ago. I decided to alternate my words with a few of my favorite of those bumper stickers we have all seen in front of us at the neighborhood stop light, and all of those all come from a web site I found called “Christian Bumper Stickers” (http://www.ruighaver.net/bumperstickers/christian.htm ).

Bashing The Blues To Bits

Post 1072

What monstrous absurdities and paradoxes have resisted whole batteries of serious arguments, and then crumbled swiftly into dust before the ringing death-knell of a laugh!

Agnes Repplier
___
I am feeling just a bit sad today. I have no reason in particular for feeling this way although there are perhaps a dozen little reasons, each fighting one another to be acknowledged as the victor. Perhaps it’s worry over health issues for those I love that will force us to travel to another state within the next few weeks for expert healthcare management. Perhaps it’s just waking to an overcast, grey day that has my body hungering for the Vitamin D that some sunshine will give. Perhaps it’s seeing friends unhappy in grief which seems to have passed the “bad luck happens in sets of three” stage. Perhaps it is sadness over my dad’s move to my sister’s in CO. Perhaps it’s unhappiness among some of my friends and colleagues from within the ranks of my church. Perhaps it’s that my life is so tied to people who have determined that because there may be another “situation” in the Middle East, that the Future’s Market can judge and issue an edict that results in ridiculous fluctuations in the price of my gasoline.
___
None of what I’ve described here is anything that I have direct control over, as much as I wish it were otherwise. The external forces that seem to be at war with us all every day are simply that….external challenges meant to undermine our confidence and resolve and spirit. Just a thought here, but perhaps they are given to us by the Devil to cause us to question our internal fortitude as well as our faith?
___
I believe that the potholes we encounter all along our pathway in life are part of the Devil’s playground and toys, intended to stir up as much “Agita” (Italian slang meaning heartburn, acid indigestion, upset stomach or, by extension, a general feeling of upset) as he can manage. Because the more upset we become, he hopes the more we will question our lives and the paths we have chosen. The question, for me, now becomes, will I allow this sadness to continue throughout my day? Or will I pick myself up, dust myself off, and put a smile not just on my face, but in my heart, as well? For we all know that like “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”, so can joy and happiness and laughter every day keep the devil away! Perhaps that is why my ha-ha posts mean so much to me, and to many of you. If somehow, we can manage just one chuckle in our day, don’t you agree that the other parts, the heavier parts, become somehow less cumbersome?

It is not often that I use another’s post exclusively in my thought. I believe that what you want to read are my thoughts, hopes, dreams….my heart and soul….rather than someone else’s. But every so often I run across an article that tugs at my heart and that is when I know the time is at hand to think outside the box a bit. I did that yesterday and I am doing it again today! Don’t worry though. Tomorrow we’ll be back to my own take on matters of faith or love or trust or whatever tickles my fancy!

___

This article came from a dear friend of mine who has been wintering someplace a bit warmer that the weather we have been having here in South Carolina, this winter. And wouldn’t you know it, that just as the temperature rises above my age, she is on her way back home. But not before she sent this to me as an email while traveling back here from Arizona in the car (Ain’t 4G wonderful?). The title of the piece was “A Great Lesson On Stress”, although I think that a more appropriate title might be, “Letting Go Of Excess Baggage”. I’ll leave it up to you to choose the one that you think fits the message best!

___

A Great Lesson On Stress

AKA

Letting Go Of Excess Baggage

A young lady confidently walked around the room while leading and explaining stress management to an audience with a raised glass of water. Everyone knew she was going to ask the ultimate question, ‘half empty or half full?’… She fooled them all …. “How heavy is this glass of water?” she inquired with a smile.  Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. To 20 oz.

She replied , “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it.If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm.If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an Ambulance. In each case it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”

She continued, “and that’s the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.””As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden – holding stress longer and better each time practiced. So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the evening and into the night… Pick them up tomorrow.
___
Sounds a bit like Psalms 55:22 (GOD’S WORD Translation), “Turn your burdens over to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will never let the righteous person stumble.” You see, He is always ready to shoulder our cares if we but trust them with Him, which is why Mary C. Crowley’s quotation has taken off like a house on fire. “Every evening I turn my worries over to God. He’s going to be up all night anyway.” Now looking back at the stumbling from the verse from Psalms, here are a few “stumbling” or “a-hem” truths that might just bring a smile to your face! I like number one because it mirrors what was once my profile quote on my social media page before I re-found religion!
___
Accept the fact that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue!
Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.
Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.
Drive carefully… It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their Maker.
If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.
If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
Never buy a car you can’t push.
Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on.
Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance.
Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.
The second mouse gets the cheese.
When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.
Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.
Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once.
We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.
A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.
Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you today.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY
Save the earth….. It’s the only planet with chocolate! I THINK !!!!

May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

The days are much too short, as they always seem to be when the time to say goodbye draws near. But say goodbye we must, because that is the way of the world and of life. It is certainly the way of the human being who waits for the day death will call from the very first moment we draw air into tiny lungs. And while there is never a good time for saying those goodbyes, they are especially bittersweet during the holidays, when we all spend so much time in celebration, and when a time of sadness and of mourning seems so out-of-place. But all of the days of man are numbered, and those days are much too short, as they always seem to be, even when that goodbye is expected or even welcomed.

Yesterday was such a time of mixed emotion for my family. We were mourning the loss of a family member…..my brother’s father-in-law, as a matter of fact. And it was time for me to speak. And even as I faced the assembly, the words and emotions were such a struggle. You see, the person we had lost suffered from end stage dementia, and it had been weeks and weeks since he had known his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. He had forgotten so many of the joyous things that had consumed his waking hours before being struck down by this insidious foe. He had forgotten his boat and fishing cronies and he had forgotten his 60th birthday when he was “Roasted” by some of his near and dear friends who knew him so well as a much younger man.

What can you say during a such a time that would do his life justice? And then I remembered the place where he now dwells…..a heavenly home where there is no more pain or want or loneliness or despair….a place where each person is vibrant and safe and warm and alive. And then my mind envisioned him in a place where his fishing pole is always baited and the fish are always biting and I needed to smile, because I realized that he was not really home for the years he walked the earth. It was not until the moment that he was carried away on the wings of angels that he was delivered to his true home! Yes, I was smiling and as I spoke, those in the room smiled too!

(Jesus’ words)

”Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”

John 14:1-4 NIV

During the up-coming days of a brand New Year, please remember the millions of our brothers and sisters who continue to suffer from the effects of Superstorm Sandy. Give as much as you can, as often as you can to the following organizations. Your gift might just mean a family who has lost everything might just have something to smile about!
